In the winter of 1977, Jeff Gater took a correspondence course from the Belsaw Institute on becoming a locksmith. He was a senior in high school, attending classes until noon and working a part time job in the afternoons and weekends. In June of the same year, Jeff completed locksmith school and graduated from high school.
While working under Jim Parker at A-1 Jeff learned to apply the knowledge he gained from locksmith school to real life experience. Jeff learned from Parker to be patient and think through new problems. At this point every problem and key making experience was new to Jeff, and Parker was a tolerant and persevering instructor.

In today's world, lock picks and "bump-keys" can easily be obtained over the World Wide Web. Although it is illegal to mail these items through the US Post Office, there are other carriers who will ship these items unquestioned. It is also very difficult for the US Post Office to know what is in every package.
Cracking a safe open because of a lost combination or malfunction has made a lot of advancements in the last 25 years. Safe locks, especially those used at least twice a day, should be disassembled, cleaned and lubricated every 18 months. Every moving part in the safe door should be inspected for loose screws and bolts and excessive wear.

I can't say enough good things about Jeff Gater- My front door lock just stopped working one day as I was leaving the house for work- he respond promptly to my call- and made himself available to meet me when it worked around my schedule- he was able to repair the problem within 20 minutes- I am so grateful for him- Am hoping I never need a locksmith again, but if I do, I know who I will be calling!

Mr. Gater installed 3 Dixie locks on our sliding doors and replaced the original lock on one, I was so impressed. He is extremely thorough and careful with his work. And such a nice gentleman too.
His prices were much less than I expected too!

Jeff Gater provides old-school service for classic and modern locks. With only a day's notice he arrived when he said he was going to - a rarity in the trades - and re-keyed and replaced multiple doorknobs for us today. From installing a keypad door deadbolt to re-keying several doorknobs, he took the time to resolve problems we weren't even aware we had like a door not closing all the way. He even patiently trained us on how to program the digital deadlock. Once underway we quickly realized other doorknob issues we wanted him to resolve and he ticked them off one after the other
