Alvin's son, Jim, became involved in the business in 1969 and from 1969 to 1985 Jim turned a small local cafe located block off of the historic square of La Grange into a thriving landmark for travelers on State Hwy 71 between Austin and Houston. The Bon Ton was well-known for its plate lunches and buffet and was one of the first establishments to offer "Chicken Fried Steak."
Jim sold the Bon Ton Restaurant in 1985 to his manager and was ready to embark on a new business venture. After Jim sold the restaurant, he and his wife, Jo Ann, decided to open a convenience store. Their vision was unique at the time as they wanted to combine a bakery with a convenience store. The "Bon Ton Store & Bakery" was opened and was later named "Weikel's Store and Bakery".

Services
If you enjoy Weikel's products, culture and story, then you would love working at Weikel's. Our employees take great pride in making and selling our famous kolaches and other baked products. Our employees need to be energetic, positive and have an upbeat personality and have a deep appreciation for a satisfying customer experience.
Our authentic Czech kolaches are the heart and soul of our bakery. Famous for the soft, fluffy dough, our kolaches are made from scratch every day from our special family recipe traced back to Czechoslovakia. Our bakery is complete with a variety of homemade pastries that are just as special and delicious as our kolaches.
Pigs-in-the-Blanket (Klobasnikies in Czech) are made by rolling sausage inside a sweet, light dough. Our sausage is a pork and beef link with casing and is about 1/2 in diameter. It is made exclusively for us to complement our dough. The ham variety contains a slice of ham rolled with Pepper Jack cheese.
We make our Cinnamon Rolls and Honey Bee Rolls from our sweet Czech dough. Our Cinnamon Rolls come plain or with raisins and pecans. The Honey Bee Rolls are like a Cinnamon Roll, but instead of icing they have a thick honey and pecan topping. Our Dinner rolls are excellent. They are also made from our sweet Czech dough, creating a unique product with just a touch of sweetness.
Our cupcakes are an absolute delight. We call them our "Contagious Cupcakes". First we take our rich and moist, yet light cake and top it with our homemade icing made from only the most premium of ingredients. Add some sprinkles, and the result is not just a cupcake, but a beautiful gourmet treat. Looking for muffins?

It's attached to a gas station - do NOT judge. We stopped in on a late Friday morning and the line was nearly out the door. However, the wait wasn't very long. What you have to try: cheese Danish, kolaches (even made with seasonal sausage!), and honey bee roll (it's like a cinnamon roll but without icing and pecans + honey instead). I had never tried a poppy seed roll until stopping in here. It was different, but good.
There are bulk items to grab and go as well, in case you're in a hurry.
This place is definitely worth the stop.

Stopped in because I saw a sign with a huge delicious sandwich. When I inquired the young gentleman was very helpful. He made me the most delicious sandwich. I’ve had in a long time. It was a turkey/ham sandwich with two cheeses and avocado. Can’t wait to pass back through! No pictures I ate it all.

Great bakery and pastry options. Cinnamon rolls and Apple fritters are the best. If you really want a treat, order one of their sandwiches made from fresh baked bread!!! Really wish their menu at the brenham location was available online or that they offered a hot/warm sandwich option. I'd still never turn down a chance to grab some food from here and neither should you.

This place is in terrible shape, smells awful, and has way too obviously been neglected. I'm never stopping here again. I don't know how they're still expecting to charge people to purchase their baked goods. Any product that's been prepared within these walls has a high likelihood of contamination. The picture is in an area available for public view. I can only imagine how gross, unclean, and compromised the employee only areas are.

Wow! Just stopped for a simple gas and restroom stop on our roadtrip, but it blew us away. Their bakery options are perfect and their cinnamon rolls are some of the best I've ever had. Many stores have dry nearly flavorless cinnamon rolls, but theirs are anything but that. The perfect amount of moisture and sweetness. Restrooms are clean and very nice. Very much recommend.

I never return from Austin, heading home to Houston without stopping to buy a half dozen fruit and cream cheese kolaches. They're so fresh and beyond delicious!! In fact, I never arrive at home with the same quantity of kolaches that I bought. Why? Because I open the package and eat at least 2!! I just can't wait to eat them!

This place kind of caught us off guard as we didn’t realize it was part of the gas station complex they own. But SO glad we tried it out. Had seen it recommended on Daytripper. We each ordered a Reuben sandwich. It came with chips. We also tried the potato and ham soup - best we’ve ever had!! They had the most delicious small crackers they served with it - ranch flavored but with a little kick from red pepper flakes. A Texas thing I guess & yummy. The sandwiches were delicious! Tender meat, great bread made there. To cap it off, we tried a piece of their pie. Chocolate cream with meringue.

I have been coming here for the past few months and I believe these are the best kolaches I've ever eaten. Whether it's sweet or savory, Weikel's is amazing. Their sandwiches and pies are incredible, as well. The ladies have always been friendly and helpful as I stand there trying to determine what I want. I will surely be here regularly!!

I agree, the blonde girl at the counter is over the top RUDE! She ignored the friendly guy in front of me, refused to answer him. I asked for two particular kolaches in display, she said I couldn't have them, turned around and picked up two with her bare hands, and I had seen her picking her nose when I walked in, and I told her I didn't want those. She said I couldn't have the ones I wanted , which I was about to ask her to use tongs or gloves, but she wanted to argue. I walked out after asking for a manager. She refused that too. Y'all need to get rid of her.

Listen to April about the rude blonde behind the counter!! She was rude to me too, lol. 3 stars for the food, it was alright. Not bad, I would go back to get something quick when I drive back and forth from Austin to Houston.
So that blonde chick behind the counter... I'm sorry I had to laugh in my head about it. I took my brother who visited from California here on Christmas Eve (we have family in Houston). I was looking for sausage kolaches and asked for it. She said "uhh... THOSE are kolaches (points at the fruit kolaches). The sausage is pigs in a blanket, not kolaches". Lol

Oh, Have Mercy! With this virus mess, we were in Brenham for a gathering of 6 people, quickly, and we came to find a breakfast type bite. I Could have eaten about 6 kolaches, but I Did eat only one cherry one. My friends, That is willpower, because I refuse to gain the "Corona 15". In the future, when in Brenham, this will be one of my first stops. The shop is not large, but has a nice selection of many kolaches and other treats, coffee, and drinks, as well. Very clean and bright, with nice staff. We also got a cream cheese pastry that was very rich and delicious.
I love kolaches

Pies look underwhelming, but we got fully disappointed after the rude/poor attitude of the young girl at the counter with short blonde hair. Asked her about the crumble pie "so it has apple in it and..." (As in what else does it have). Her Actual response "umm, yea.. it's an apple pie so it's gonna have apple in it".
I told her she didn't have to be rude about it and took my money elsewhere.

Those ladies behind the counter are a delight. I got a few and dawdled and saw the apple strudel. Am i glad i did that. I was told i would keep coming back. These kolache were squared. Lemon, strawberry, poppyseed, cheese, raspberry, apricot, ran out of peach. Now i realize that these are in the supermaket as danishes! They originated by the Czech and the Texans.cool. they were soft as a pillow. Got a pecan square. So many pecans. Apple strudel had wonderful apples, rains, and nuts. You must stop by! They also have pumpkin and banana loaf, fruit cake, wheat bread, dry noodles, pasta, jams

We came by in the afternoon on a Saturday. The bakery is attached to the convenience store. I tried the ham and cheese. I liked the ham because I do like the ham to be a little dry sometimes when I'm eating it in certain items. I like the contrast of the thin and dry ham with the melted cheese. The bread was sweet and super soft. They have a microwave that you can use to heat your items to your preference. They also sold items in pre-packed packages.

Don't fall for this place. Don't fall for the Nitro Coffee - it tastes really old and just odd. Don't fall for the ham and cheese kolache - with barely any ham in it (I'd recommend they take the word "authentic" off of their advertising). Don't fall for the way too sweet sweet kolaches (with possible exception to the cottage cheese one - they haven't figured out how inject the individual curds with sugar yet). Don't fall for the 6 pack deal - there's no discount unless you get 6 sweet kolaches OR 6 savory. Don't fall for the ATM, which is out

Was on the road and saw a billboard for these guys, decided to give them a chance and I'm glad I did!
The bakery is joined with a gas station and a fast food restaurant. Seems a little odd, but I just went with it.
The bakery section is smallish but tons to choose from. When I first walked in I noticed shelves of jams, jellies, syrup, pickles and pickles things.
Display cases full of pies, doughnuts, cookies, muffins, cinnamon rolls and the reason for my stop...kolaches!
I settled on a lemon and a poppy seed roll. Both were amazing! They were not traditional kolaches, sweeter and more
