TPS Lab, formerly Texas Plant and Soil Lab, is located in the Upper Rio Grande Valley and was established in 1938 by Dr. George Schultz as Texas Soil Laboratory, Inc. Originally from Germany, Dr. Schultz emigrated to the US in 1933 through Ellis Island. Jobs were hard to find, then, even for a man with a Ph.

A soil test refers to analyzing a soil sample to determine nutrient content, composition, and other characteristics such as the pH level in agriculture. A soil test can determine fertility, indicate nutrient deficiencies, potential toxicities from excessive fertilization, and heavy metals. At TPS Lab, we use a method that mimics the function of roots in the soil, making our results accurate with any soil type.
As we enter the 21st century, we encounter difficulty in obtaining adequate irrigation water supply. Many water sources have increasing salt content. Effluent water containing salts must be used. In other areas, aquifers' water levels are rapidly decreasing, and governments are severely restricting the amount of water that may be withdrawn for irrigation.
In addition to being an approved laboratory for the U.S. Composting Council, TPS Lab offers its own series of Plant Natural(R) compost quality tests. Taking full advantage of compost's potential requires knowledge of its quality. Compost quality is a combination of nutrient content and carbon "decomposability, " which is the same as maturity.
