Checking your home's insulation is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to use a whole-house approach to reduce energy waste and make the most of your energy dollars. A good insulating system includes a combination of products and construction techniques that protect a home from outside hot or cold temperatures, protect it against air leaks and control moisture.
If your attic floor is insulated but the wood beams (joists) are still visible, you probably don't have enough. But even if you can not see your beams, that's still no guarantee that you have enough insulation. If it is less than R-30 (11 inches of fiber glass or rock wool or 8 inches of cellulose), you could probably benefit by adding more.
The first step before insulating the attic is to check for any possible gaps or air leaks from the attic into the home. All these gaps must be sealed and the ducts must be redirected outside. A special attention must be paid to the chimneys, as they must have sealants around them. In the same way, the tops of the interior walls must be sealed, too.
Heating and cooling ("space conditioning") account for 50 to 70% of the energy used in the average American home. About 20% goes for heating water. On the other hand, lighting and appliances and everything else account for only 10 to 30% of the energy used in most residences.

It makes good sense to turn lights and appliances off when they are not needed, and you'll save even more on your energy costs by reducing the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling.Reduce your Energy bills. The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Building Technology's number one recommendation to help consumers reduce energy bills is by adding insulation.
The attic is one of the largest sources of potential energy loss in a home and often one of the most neglected areas when it comes to insulation, especially in older homes. That's why adequate insulation is so important because without the proper attic insulation, your energy bills could be significantly higher.
