Our Resident Program is for people who wish to practice and learn at Upaya for a minimum of 4 months. We have hundreds of hours of talks spanning over a decade, all available for free listening. Videos, writings, poetry and other resources generated in the course of our online programs, to be taken at your own pace.
Upaya Zen Center's local Santa Fe Sangha is a very important part of our mandala of engaged practice. In this third and last part of the Being with Suffering series, the focus is on acting with principled compassion and embodied integrity. It built upon the prior two Being with Suffering retreats (although all are welcome even if you have not participated in BWS 1 or 2).

Roshi Joan Halifax has created a space where serious practitioners as well as professionals and laypeople may come together in a community that embraces spiritual inquiry. Roshi's approach is practical, well researched, and has both immediate as well as long term applications. I attended her GRACE training, a three day retreat that emphasizes how to work within "helping" professions (she would say professions of "service") and embrace mindful communication with those we serve. The meditation, instruction, exercises and implementation were nothing short of transformative

I spent the morning at the Zen Center meditating. It was a formal session at 7 AM on a weekday. The form is very regimented and rigid. Every move is carefully orchestrated according to Japanese tradition. Afterwards I stood outside and the five other participants including the Roshi walked past me without acknowledging me or smiling. Don't expect any banter or even welcome here. The grounds are very beautiful with a combination of traditional Japanese and wild New Mexican elements.

This review is SO long past due....I visit Upaya every time I visit Santa Fe. It's stunning in its simplistic beauty. Easy to get to. And of course a welcoming spirit - from the grounds and from the staff. It is a Buddhist center and people come here for various reasons...and most (to include myself) like our space and quiet time. I've participated in one program, otherwise I enjoy Zazen, grounds, Samu and meals. I've yet to stay at the center - it's on my to do!

Amazing place. After a weekend retreat it was very hard to leave...
A place to find peace, and get in touch with yourself. Learn something and spend time in much needed silence. Beautiful building, temple, kitchen, patio, amazing food.
A place to experience zen ceremony.
even if you are not doing a retreat but you are visiting santa fe, you can stop by for morning or evening 1 h meditation.
