Cotton, Shires and Associates, Inc. (CSA) provides a full range of engineering geologic and geotechnical engineering services. Since 1974, our geologists and geotechnical engineers have applied advanced geotechnical analysis for a variety of clients throughout California and the Western United States. In addition to providing geotechnical engineering investigation and design services, CSA provides design, construction management, inspection, and litigation support services. We solve complex geotechnical challenges.
Services
Cotton, Shires and Associates, Inc. (CSA) is a successor of William Cotton and Associates, formed by Bill Cotton in 1974. Bill has been widely recognized for his geological expertise and his excellent field mapping skills. CSA continues the tradition of a firm strongly rooted in detailed geologic observational skills combined with advanced geotechnical engineering and geophysical capabilities.
CSA is recognized for its expertise in the characterization of earth movement, including landslides and landslide potential, levee failures, dam instability, and soil creep distress. We use unique subsurface investigation techniques best suited to exploration of slope stability problems and provide cost-effective recommendations for siting, design and slope remediation.
CSA has worked extensively on characterization of active faults and seismic hazards. Our investigations usually result in recommendations for fault setbacks that greatly reduce fault rupture hazard. We have completed fault investigations for dams, schools and water storage facilities located in close proximity to active fault zones.
Our principals are often called upon to function as the neutral or independent consultant in large litigation cases. As an expert witness, we carry out detailed geotechnical investigations in order to determine the type and extent of damage, and the likely contributing causes of damage. In many cases, CSA is asked to design engineering solutions and provide construction cost estimates to repair the damage.
CSA has been at the forefront of geologic hazard assessments of hillside areas for over three decades. Representative projects conducted by our team of engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers range in size and scope from relatively small, subdivision-sized investigations to large projects involving tens to hundreds of square miles.
