My father introduced me to the art of hand lettering and sign making at an early age. I started helping him when I was a teenager in the early 1970s. He impressed upon me the need for using an appropriate font, not overcrowding the lettering, leaving plenty of margin space, proper kerning (spacing between lettering), pleasing color choices, and overall readability, especially from a distance or on a moving vehicle.
