HISTORY: South Central Mental Health opened our doors in 1962 to become one of the first community mental health centers (CMHC) in the state of Kansas. It was recognized by a group of citizens in Butler County that there was a need to address a person's psychological health in addition to their physical health.
SCMH offers a comprehensive range of services to people experiencing concerns related to their emotional and mental health. These concerns may be for short term assistance and education related to life stressors and relationships or for moderate to severe mental health or substance use issues. Our staff is highly trained and only use evidence based practices.
You should be commended for actually making the decision to seek out treatment for a mental health concern. While seeking psychological care is as easy for some people as scheduling a check-up with their doctor, for most people, it is a very anxiety producing, fearful process. It is estimated that 20% of the US population has a mental illness in any given year but there is a 10 year delay between the first onset of symptoms and first treatment.
Individual therapy is a collaborative process between you and your therapist that aims to improve your quality of life and the specific goals you may have. Individual therapy is often sought for common concerns such as; relationship issues, difficulty dealing with stress, and employment issues. It is also sought for more specific mental health issues such as; depression, anxiety, trauma, or ADHD.
Many mental illnesses may benefit from treatment with prescription medications. We will prescribe and manage such medications for our clients when appropriate. Our team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and medical assistants work together with our clients and their families to choose the best medications for their needs.
