Safety is our primary concern; therefore, in compliance with CDC guidelines and AK state recommendations, Mako's Water Taxi requires unvaccinated passengers to wear a face mask if they plan to ride inside the cabin. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. The longest spit in the world is the Arabat Spit in the Sea of Azov, Ukraine, at 70 miles long.
The second longest is the Farewell Spit on the South Island, New Zealand, at just over 16 miles long. The Homer spit is four and a half miles long, and is where Mako's Water Taxi has been providing transportation across Kachemak Bay for locals and visitors since 1996. Mako's Water Taxi will take you to some of the most interesting, breathtaking, fun places around Kachemak Bay.

Services
Below are some of our most popular treks and tours. We are also proud to offer a variety of custom tours, tailored to fit your group size and time frame. Please contact us for more info. Take our boat to the Jakolof Bay dock, where you will be met by a land taxi for the 11 mile trip to the historic Alaskan fishing community of Seldovia.
If you don't find the info you're looking for, please contact us and we'll be happy to provide it. Where is your office? As you approach the end of the Homer Spit you will see the Homer Harbor on your left. Look to your left for a bright orange sign: Mako's Water Taxi. If you get to the Salty Dawg Saloon, a wooden lighthouse on the left, you've gone too far.
Bear Cove sits nestled at the base of the Kenai Mountains, with their snow capped peaks and glacial valleys. Bear Cove consists of privately owned homes and properties, and lies close to the head of Kachemak Bay. It is about an hour boat ride to get there from the Homer Harbor, and once there you are in old Alaska, remote and spectacularly beautiful, and the cell reception gets better every year.
Chinapoot Bay is broad, expansive, and shallow. Its an estuary, really, and you'll find a lot of life here. This is due to the very large tides here in Kachemak Bay. During a big tide series (high high tides and minus low tides) much of Chinapoot Bay's mudflats are exposed at low tide. Good for the clammers, bad for the clams.
This easy hike is well suited for most ages and abilities. The adventure begins with some tidepooling in Rusty's Lagoon. The trail starts with a walk through woods, which open up to glacial moraines that offer wonderful vistas of mountain and ice. Follow the well maintained trail to the lake where the majestic Grewingk Glacier calves icebergs.

Mako's is staffed by friendly, dependable folks. They gave good advice and a small print map for the Glacier Lake & Saddle Trail hike, which ended up being one of our favorite experiences in Alaska.
On the way over on the Orca, the captain told us all about Kachemak Bay, the wildlife, and communities. We got dropped at Glacier Spit and the captain pointed out the trailhead for us.
Hike was amazing, but with nasty weather coming in, we texted for a slightly earlier pickup and they swooped in. They really went the extra mile for us.
Heads up - we got a bounceback when texting the text

Your experience with Mako's will 100% be based on who your captain is. This will not be reflective of your attitude, where you're going, how many people are in your group, how experienced you are, etc. It is going to be at the whim of fate. You might have an incredible experience with wonderful, helpful individuals... or a series of awful interactions that, quite honestly, can ruin your trip--or at least get it off to a bad start.
If you have no other choice, go with Mako's. Otherwise, I recommend spending your money at a different water taxi company that consistently treats their

We had the pleasure of taking 2 rides with Mako's water taxi service. From the front desk to the boat captains, everyone was so unbelievably kind and amazing! I'm so glad I stumbled upon them while searching through water taxi options. Both captains of ours were knowledgeable, and showed true excitement when seeing wildlife. EVERY time we saw an otter, they would stop the boat so we could enjoy watching them for a few minutes. Our 2nd day the captain was so keen-eyed and was able to spot a baby bear cub on the beach, and he drove us right up to the shore to just watch it for about 15 minutes. I

Mako's water taxi has competent and amazing Captains that can get you to the coolest outdoor access on the Peninsula. Here are a few pictures of my last trip, boated over with Mako's with an awesome Captain and they worked with us, asking another Captain to come in, in order to be sure we would make it across on the day of our choice. Truly magical experience, I can't recommend them enough.

Our family decided at the last minute to utilize the most beautiful day of our vacation to take a tour to see some Wildlife. I was told to call Mako Tours by another tour company who was full due to it being last minute. Make Tours was so delightful not speak with on the phone and even though they had an emergency they were able to accommodate us. Captain Curt is a biologist and was a wealth of information. He took us to see Sea otters, Harbor Seals and several species of shorebirds.
No whales or orcas but that just gives us something to look forward to seeing next time.
I highly recommend this

My family and I took a 2 hour sight seeing tour woth Mako's yesterday. The staff who coordinated the trip were wonderfully hospitable going above and beyond to find an opening last minute to meet our spur of the moment wish.
Our skipper was fantastic! Very friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to flex to make the trip exactly what we were looking for. And don't get me started about how spectacular the sights are ALL AROUND Katchemak Bay!
We visited Halibut Cove, saw Grewingk Glacier, tons of sea otters to include mommas with their pups, a secluded beach with caves, and Gull Island. Our skipper even

Totally recommend this water taxi outfit.
They were beyond friendly.
I called a few days before our trip to ask a few questions and was given such amazing guidance. They let me know the plan I had wasn't a good option. That the trail I had planned to hike was in bad shape. And offered an alternate route.
Very informative and friendly.
Check in was an easy process and loading up.
We got dropped at the beach and had a plan to be picked up two days later.
Everything went really smoothly. Definitely recommend this company!

A lovely, organized way to take a trip across the bay! This company was able to get my family in last minute for a jaunt to Glacier Lake, and work hard to accommodate our different schedules coming back. All the staff was cheerful and confident, and our captain aboard the Mulligan handled the choppy water with ease. I felt safe and like it was well worth the cost with these guys! Check 'em out first if you ever need a water taxi

We were very happy with their service. The girls in the office were helpful and patient with us as we asked our many questions. Our plan was to take the water taxi over to hike to Grewink glacier. One concern we had was the presence of brown bears, being only in a group of 2. It turned out not to be a problem as there was quite a bit of hiker activity over there.
When we arrived in the morning, we learned that, due to the rougher ocean conditions, they had to adjust the drop-off point. Although disappointing, safety is first and I appreciate their conscientious management of the business. Everything

Four adults and two children each spent $75 each fir two hours on a group nature tour on the water. We did see lots of sea otters and went by the bird rookery but nothing else. The Captain did not make one comment during the entire trip-- other than a few safety directions. And we spent about half an hour touring Halibut Cove seeing lots of fancy houses. That being said the water and views of the mountains were spectacular-- but also can be enjoyed from walking on the beach.

Mako's Water Taxi is the bow that ties Homer together.
After spending one night and one day exploring this town, I feel like Mako's is a perfect way to understand what Homer is really all about: COMMUNITY.
We chose the hour-and-a-half, ride-along tour for $50 per person. They allow doggos on board, so our not-so-fearless pupper came along for the ride. The whole set-up of the tour is unique to every person, as we are literally just "along for the ride" as the captain drops off and picks up other people throughout Kachemak Bay.

The 3rd part of our Fly, Hike, and Boat tour was a pickup from Halibut Cove. All we knew was Mako's was picking us up. I thought the boat would have Mako's written on it, but it didn't. We waited around on the upper deck of the boat ramp before we realized this guy waiting below was our ride. It was our first ride so we didn't know better. We stopped at one other location to pick up another couple and back to the Spit we went. Once ashore we stopped in the office to pay for our ride. While there we started talking to the girls and arranged a kayak trip for the next morning
