Established nearly 45 years ago in South Florida, Toledo Iron Works has become one of the most recognized names in the ornamental metals industry. Toledo Iron Works was founded by Gregorio Surez, and his son Guillermo Surez Sr. in South Florida in the late 60's. Gregorio was originally a Jai-Alai player, whose extensive trips to Europe at the early part of the 20th century opened up a thirst for creativity.
Taking advantage of his popularity in Jai-Alai, Gregorio was able to secure apprenticeships in the world of blacksmithing. He continued to learn and master this craft throughout Spain and Italy under the watchful eye of the greatest masters of the time. Eventually he would pass on his knowledge to his son and together would officially establish Toledo Doors in 1973.

Probably the most misunderstood subject of metalwork. Hand-forged metalwork is worked on an anvil while the material is red hot. It is heated in a Forge in order to allow the material to achieve a "rubbery" feel to allow the blacksmith to sculpt, hammer and shape the metal into its desired shape.
By continuously working the metal, the blacksmith achieves the gracefulness and intricate patterns that can only be achieved with authentic hand-forged metalwork.Cast metalwork on the otherhand is "cast" in molds and not worked beyond the point of being poured. The great majority of cast metalwork available through most supply houses are cast in sand thus producing the unsightly grainy texture and seams associated with cast metal.

One of the most misunderstood and abused terms in today's design world. Probably the romantic connotation of the terms "wrought iron" or "hand-forged metal" have contributed to its abuse. Most individuals are unaware of what true wrought iron or hand-forged metal is and sadly, even more end up with either machine produced pieces or off-the-shelf items passed off as hand-forged.
