The purpose of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant(WIPP) Environmental Monitoring Project is to establish and maintain independent environmental research and monitoring in the vicinity of the WIPP and to make the results easily accessible to all interested parties. This project began implementation during the WIPP pre-disposal phase, and is continuing during the operational (disposal) phase.

The WIPP EM project is organized and carried out independent of direct oversight by Department Of Energy(DOE), and the project does not provide data to any regulatory body to meet the compliance demonstration requirements applicable to the WIPP. Analytical results and interpretations from the WIPP-EM are published by CEMRC to inform the public and particularly the environmental science community.

The Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring & Research Center (CEMRC), as part of its internal dosimetry program, is conducting an in vivo radiobioassay research project entitled "Lie Down and Be Counted". This project involves citizen research volunteers from southeastern New Mexico and supports education for the public about naturally occurring radioactivity and CEMRC 's environmental studies.
Believe it or not, behind the marvels and modern miracles of science are American citizens just like you. Many of the advances discovered by scientific researchers would not have been possible without the help of citizen research volunteers-dedicated individuals who gave their time to further the pursuit of knowledge.
For example, have you ever worked in a nuclear power plant or weapons facility? Note: Your answers to these questions will remain confidential. Information from the questionnaire will be used only for purposes of the Internal Dosimetry Project!. Scientific research continues to improve the quality of our lives-contributing to our comfort and convenience, our safety, our health, and our happiness.
The counting chamber measuring 8 feet x 8 feet x 8 feet and is constructed of 10 inch thick cast iron, with a full graded-Z liner consisting of lead, tin and stainless steel. The Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring & Research Center's has a fixed in vivo bioassay facility which occupies approximately 966 square feet, and provides the primary analytical infrastructure for the internal dosimetry program.
One of the Center's primary objectives is the establishment of a health and environmental database accessible to all sectors. It is the role of the information management department to carry out this function for the Center by developing, implementing and growing information management systems. Information management includes formal systems for data archival and documentation that facilitate analyses and accurate interpretations.
