FLOATING STONE WOODWORKS, owned and operated by artist and craftsman Michael Pietragalla, is a custom furniture shop in New Bedford, Massachusetts. We specialize in hand-crafted tables, bookcases, consoles, case pieces and benches. Every piece of furniture is built and finished individually. Joints are precision cut and hand-fitted.

Finishes are hand-rubbed oil and varnish, or French polished shellac. Each piece is signed and dated. We use highly figured hardwoods sourced from FSC certified dealers who buy only from managed, renewable forests - quarter-sawn white oak, cherry, maple and walnut. We don't use plywood or veneers and limit the use of imported woods, such as mahogany and teak.
Services
Thank you for creating such a beautiful piece for us. In the timeless spirit of the Arts & Crafts artisans, you built our new table with care and skill. The meals our family shares at the table will soak into it and create the stories that make life rich. This table was something our family wanted for many years, and our heartfelt thanks go to you for building it for us.
Floating Stone Woodworks boxes are one-of-a-kind, functional works of art. Our Treasure Boxes are carefully crafted from recycled or repurposed woods, in unique combinations of grains and tones. They feature distinctive touches such as lid embellishments and hinge or feet details. Each has its own individual configuration, with stacking interior trays to hold jewelry, watches, or secret treasures.
Floating Stone Woodworks offers a complete collection of hand-made utensils for your cooking and serving needs, from cheese knives and boards to spoons and scoops. Designed to highlight unique wood-grain details, our carefully crafted instruments are a joy to touch and to use. Perfect as hostess or wedding gifts!
FLOATING STONE WOODWORKS offers restoration and refinishing services for furniture that has been damaged or neglected in some way (needing parts, dried out glue, split tops) or just needs some minor work to clean up the previous "repair." We enjoy this piece of history and seeing how construction techniques have changed as mass production became more important than quality.
Two pieces of our furniture, pictured below, are currently on display at the WINTER MEMBER'S SHOW at the Marion Art Center in Marion, MA. You are welcome to visit the ART CENTER'S WEBSITE for details! We are thrilled to announce that our HIDDEN TREASURE BOX, pictured below, has been accepted into the 2021 MassArt Auction, a fund-raiser held every spring at the Massachusetts College of Art & Design in Boston.
