We usually recommend composite. While it is a little more expensive than wood, it requires very little maintenance and doesn't need much more than a wash-down once a year. Depending on what materials you select, the cost of a new deck can run anywhere from about $15 to $30 per square foot. Given how particular we are, my husband and I spent a lot of time searching for someone to build our deck. We interviewed several companies. I have to add to my earlier post to mention that Clint came back a few months after the deck was finished and spent at least an entire day power washing and scrubbing it with solution (our pool guys tramped concrete or something all over it). It didn't all come out but he did his best. And he did it WITHOUT CHARGE - what a class act.
