Periodontal (gum) disease is an inflammation or infection of the gums and bone that support the teeth. It's caused by the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, nearly colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth). Advanced periodontitis is present when the teeth continue to lose their attachment and the supporting bone is destroyed.
The method of treating periodontal disease depends upon the type of the disease and how far the condition has progressed. A periodontal probe is used to measure the space between your tooth and gum to determine the extent of the disease. Dental X-rays can also be used to determine whether or not bone has been damaged or destroyed.
If you would like to reduce your risk of developing gum disease, the most important thing to do is to develop good oral-hygiene habits. Also, make sure to schedule regular checkups so that your dentist can check for early signs of gum disease. We can work closely with your regular dentist to ensure proper treatment or you can contact us directly without the need for a dental referral.
