Coming from a very construction oriented family, our founder Richard Gilman began building things at age 4. His father, James Gilman, was an architect and all 6 of his older brothers were carpenters. After high school, he started as a laborer, and at age 20 he was hired as a carpenter. By age 21, he was a foreman for Heritage Builders East.
He worked there for 10 years doing Timberpeg Custom Homes, custom building all the cabinets, staircases, and balustrade. After that, he worked for Broughman Builders for 6 years, building more conventional custom homes. In 1998, Gilman Carpentry was born in Hancock, Maine. When Gilman Carpentry first began, we specialized in residential and commercial projects.
