Services
Membership to IPS is restricted to Indiana-based psychiatrists who hold dual membership with the American Psychiatric Association. Continuing Education: Twice annually, IPS hosts accredited symposia for members and other health care professionals. These events offer 4-12 hours of APA PRA Category 1 credit.
The American Psychiatric Association (APA), founded in 1844, is the world's largest psychiatric organization. It is a medical specialty society representing more than 38,000 psychiatric physicians from the United States and around the world. Its member physicians work together to ensure humane care and effective treatment for all persons with mental disorders, including intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders.
A psychiatrist is a physician (M.D. or D.O.) who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. It takes many years of education and training to become a psychiatrist: He or she must graduate from college and then medical school, and go on to complete four years of residency training in the field of psychiatry.
Of all the mental health providers in the United States, only psychiatrists are fully licensed medical doctors. Because they are physicians, psychiatrists can order or perform a full range of medical laboratory and psychological tests that provide a complete picture of a patient's physical and mental state.
