Learn new ways to eat healthy by signing up today for a guided grocery store tour by our certified dietitian. We have a patient-centered model that boosts the feeling of humanity in medicine and improves the overall experience of care. Patient-centered care replaces the traditional provider-centered system with one that revolves around the patient.

This method of care relies upon effective communication, empathy, and a feeling of partnership between the provider and patient to improve health outcomes. Patient-centered providers are able to help their patients become more active in the management of their diseases. Help us reduce barriers to quality healthcare for the uninsured struggling with chronic conditions.
Services
The Mission of the MLK Health Center & Pharmacy is to extend comprehensive primary healthcare and pharmacy services at no cost to uninsured patients with chronic illness who otherwise often forgo routine medical care because of a lack of resources. MLK Health Center & Pharmacy was founded in 1986 by then LSUHSC School of Medicine Resident, Dr. Robert H. Jackson and the late Sister Margaret McCaffrey.
We understand how struggling with your health can make it difficult to provide for your family and be an active part of the community. We also understand that small changes to our diets can significantly improve our health. Diabetes Prevention Program: make realistic lifestyle changes to reduce risk of Type 2 diabetes with this weekly class.
Many of the health issues we struggle with can be significantly improved by healthy changes to our diets. To help us teach our patients how to improve their diets, we converted the empty lot next to our building into a garden and learning center. The MLK Garden & Learning Center blooms year-round and serves as a teaching facility.
In 2012, the center was awarded the Community Foundation's prestigious Return on Community Investment (ROCI) award. For every $1 invested in the center, an average of $25 is returned to the community in services provided. Martin Luther King Health Center has received the GuideStar Exchange Gold level logo.
MLK recognizes our health care system should have the potential to deliver quality health care to everyone. Yet, we know that some people are not getting the care or health care value they need. Many population groups receive health care that is lower in quality than other sectors in our community which leads to troubling statistics especially for the poor.
