Moisture and mold problems go hand in hand and occur in all areas of the U.S. Molds are a type of multicellular fungus that grow extremely well in even slightly damp conditions. While not all species of mold are toxic, many forms of the fungus are harmful to people and animals if their spoors are inhaled or come into contact with the skin.
Mold can be the result of inadequate ventilation, a leaking roof, a plumbing issue, poorly landscaped areas or an inadequate gutter system that channels water into a building, improperly vented combustion appliances or a flood. Some buildings, built from the 1970s through the 90s, were constructed with techniques that were designed to make the buildings more energy efficient.
