
Cultivating a healthy community by strengthening local agriculture and improving access to nutritious, affordable food. Grow Some Good is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating hands-on, outdoor learning experiences that cultivate curiosity about natural life cycles, connect students to their food sources, and inspire better nutrition choices.
In addition to helping establish food gardens and living science labs in local schools, we provide resources and curriculum support through community partnerships in agriculture, science, food education, and nutrition. Our program was created in 2008 under South Maui Sustainability's School Garden Committee to support gardens created at Kihei Elementary, Lokelani Intermediate School and Kamali'i Elementary.

Since 2008, Grow Some Good has provided school garden programming and now supports over 7000 students each year. School Gardens are a key resource for learning, engaging with nature, and instilling. Composting principles have always been part of the Grow Some Good curriculum however in the 2019-2020 school year, we kicked off the zero waste program.

We provide materials, staffing support and workdays though service relationships, grants and our volunteer program.
Composting principles have always been part of the Grow Some Good curriculum however in the 2019-2020 school year, we kicked off the zero waste program. Food waste from the cafeteria was composted and put back into the garden to create a more fertile growing environment.
When Gretchen Losano, co-founder of West Maui Green Cycle, approached Grow Some Good about a garden coordinator position, inspiration for a new pilot program with Lahaina Intermediate School was born.In her letter, she proposed a different option for the position via. Each year, we do a School Garden Survey of teachers and principals to check in with our schools and determine if we are meeting their needs, and how we can do better.

This program was kicked off in 2020 with our support of 2 community gardens at the YMCA and Big Brothers, Big Sisters. With the high rate of food insecurity on Maui, we decided to name the program to encompass more. We grow and distribute plants to people who want to learn to grow their own food. We share information on care, growing, use and storage of many types of plants that grow well in our tropical climates.
In selecting our platform, we have made some exciting changes. We are going to use our own website where we can maintain security and utilize a well-established learning management system. While we are still putting up all the lessons, many are available for use already. The system will track your completion of courses.
