Frank Gerten's vision of quality garden goods in the early 1900's began with a simple motto: "Buy from the Grower." Frank began Gertens as a small truck farm, selling the produce he grew on his beloved land primarily to the local residents. Frank eventually handed his quickly growing company over to his two sons, Bob & Jerry.
In 1989, the third generation of Gertens became primary owners: Bob Gertens' two sons, Lewis and Glen, and Bob's son-in-law, Gino Pitera. This new generation exuded the same passion for local growth, keeping their grandfather's vision close to heart. During the summer of 1996, Gertens began an expansion project to increase our retail store to more than 40,000 square feet.

So it's my sweet grandma's 70th birthday and I came in this "establishment" looking for a plant to gift her. To my surprise, there were no good options. Very boring and stale selection. The only positive side was the girl who helped me out , Nicole. She was very knowledgeable of plants and pointed me to a shop were I found what I was looking for.

The Canadian Hemlock delivered to my property is beautiful. I watched, from afar, as Israel and David ensured correct placement, dug a deep hole in clay, planted the tree, back filled, and mulched the tree. On time, careful, and actually handled the tree with care even though it was very heavy. Thank you, Israel and David, and Gertens.

Great selection of plants as well as gift items. We stopped in to pick up a pet memorial for a family member who recently lost their dog, and we were very impressed by the variety of options. We are also big fans of the Yeti brand and we loved the assortment and the many items to choose from. They even had some of the new colors that had just been released. It did seem like it was hard to find help though, and so that could be an opportunity for improvement.

Gertens is my go-to garden center in Dakota County. I have been a customer for over 6 years and have always had good luck with their plants and products. I have bought everything from citrus trees, palm trees, tropicals, berry bushes, vegetables, herbs, perennials, and annuals and have been satisfied with all of their plants.
They have a huge selection and variety so there is always something to catch your eye. You won't find as many rare or unique plants like at Highland Nursery but from time to time you might be surprised (especially in their tropicals selection - Avocado Trees!). And with

I feel like you really have to weed out the bad reviews here.
As a moving present, my sister in law gave us a gift card to Gertens. She knew that we liked to garden, and hoped that our new house would have a space for it. Unfortunately, it doesn't, but we still had some landscaping projects to work on.
Gertens is MASSIVE. You really need to be focused and prepared when you go there. I've only seen a few home and garden stores that were this big.
The prices here are a bit higher than you will get somewhere else, that is true, but they aren't super high end either. Yes buying

Prepare to feel motivated for a Project! Everything seems so easy when you're there...
"Oh, I'll just throw a paver patio in the backyard"
"I can totally do a water feature..."
"It won't be hard to pull up those old plants and put down new weed barrier and mulch"
"I've never done a retaining wall but how hard can it be?"
"I'll just clear that landscaping rock at home and put in a flower bed"
Then reality sets in and you realize landscaping companies exist for a reason.
The selection and pricing at Gertens is worth

I have a love and hate relationship with The Gertens. On one hand, their plant selection is elaborate. They have plants you only read about in gardening magazines, they probably have every type of cornflower known to humans. When there, I want to buy it all!
On the other hand, they are overpriced and crowded. They sell a lot of plants that are not zoned for Minnesota, they don't consistently mark plants that are deer/rabbit resistant, and their sales are a joke. They have a lot of sales associates, but only a few that really know their plants, if you manage to catch one - you are in luck

If you are at all interested in plants and gardening, odds are you know about Gertens-one of the largest green houses and garden centers in the twin cities area. Every time I go it seems they are even bigger than before with everything you need to beautify your home from flowers and plants to statuary, vegetables, landscaping materials and even grills. We've been getting stuff from them for years and have to say their selection is absolutely huge.
They have lots of helpful staff to direct you around there massive outdoor lot and numerous green houses. If you want the big stuff, boulders etc
