Business conditions in the iron mining industry of northeastern Minnesota were not exactly booming in 1952 when James Arthur Abernethy founded Industrial Weldors & Machinists (IWM) in a small shop at 350 South First Avenue East. The Korean War was stalemated, and the nation was locked in the grip of an industry-wide steel strike.
Our 40,500 square foot facility is located in Duluth, Minnesota's west end with immediate access to Interstate 35. Presently, we have over 30 skilled employees and have proudly operated as a Union Shop for the majority of our years in business. Industrial Weldors & Machinists Inc. carries a large inventory of standard materials on-site to better assist our customers' needs for general or emergency repairs.
IWM has a complete 18,000 square foot machine shop filled with small, medium, and large equipment. As with our fabricating shop, we have a mix of skilled, seasoned veterans on our machinist team, and some of the brightest from this present generation of young tradesmen. The machine shop is also equipped with two bridge cranes 20 Ton and 25 Ton, and 2 Ton jib hoists.
IWM has been building Cable Reels for the following Drill and Shovel OEM's, since 1973, with over 850 units built for Bucyrus Erie, Marion, Caterpillar, Ingersoll Rand, Atlas Copco, P&H, and Joy Global. IWM also provides direct sales of Cable Reels and spare parts to the end user. Our Electric Cable Reel is designed and manufactured by IWM.
IWM carries a large inventory of standard carbon steel plate, T-1 plate, hot and cold round bar stock, structural, and mechanical and structural tubing to suit our customer's needs. For over fifteen years, IWM has been the Northland's only authorized reseller of Tricon's Tri-Braze and Super-C wear plate solutions.
