In 1993, Mike and I decided to leave our city lives behind and buy Belle Meade Farm. The Kilby Family had owned the farm for 90 years. The farmhouse was in benign neglect; the land was tired and in need of replenishing. We looked at each other and wondered where to begin. Clearly the house needed bathrooms and heat, so we began the renovation project.
Welcome to Belle Meade Montessori School! 2020-2021 is our 14th year. We encourage you to explore what our program has to offer and arrange a visit our school. Our holistic approach to education values community, the individual, creativity, responsibility, and working together. Within this nurturing environment, students develop academic competence and independence, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Belle Meade Montessori School provides an exceptional education that emphasizes individual responsibility as well as social and environmental consciousness through experiential learning.

Grounded in the ideals of sustainable living, Belle Meade strives to create an atmosphere where students can discover their passions, express their creativity, develop responsibility, forge meaningful relationships, and learn to be contributing members of a community.
Dr. Maria Montessori was at the vanguard of developmental psychology. Through her direct observation and interaction with children during the early 1900s, Dr. Montessori realized that children develop through stages, each one distinct and critical to children's unfolding as individuals and members of society.
Every day at Belle Meade provides students with opportunities to connect with each other and the land. Students begin and end each day with circle and farm chores. Circle is a daily time for reflection and sharing where students and staff express their ideas as equals. Chores build personal responsibility, teamwork, and cooperation while fostering care for the school and the farm.
