After over 30-plus years, Topside Marine is closed as a boat service and storage business. We lost our lease and the property has sold. We discontinued the repair shop and boat storage in the summer of 2021. As we transition and move to a small building, we will not conduct any business until we open later this year as a marine parts center.
We plan to have an online store, as well as phone and walk-in sales. Our contact information will not change and our phone number and and email address will remain the same. We wish to thank all of our customers for their patronage. Over the years, many of you have become our friends. Topside Marine has been a dream come true and exceeded all of our expectations!

Services
Jim Jones established Topside Marine in late 1989 when the auto mechanics of the local Automotive Union went on strike. He made the decision not to return to work at the auto dealership. As side work, Jim had been working on ski boats from his garage in the driveway of his home for years and had a growing customer base.

I bought a boat that I thought was good. Took it in to Topside marine to get a service done and to check everything out. Ending up that that engine had 2 dead cylinders. Knowing that I was screwed Bill and Jim kept me from jumping off the ledge. They ending up doing the work and overhauling my trailer. After the work I took it out and the boat ran like it was new. Bill, Jim and there tech Bill were a great group of guys and pay close attention to doing great work. There shop is clean and all of them are very knowledgeable. I definitely found a great boat shop to take my 1997 Mastercraft 190 too

Don't bother with these con artists. They'll take your money and then give you condescending lectures and snide remarks. I bought a boat last year and took it to these guys to do a diagnostic on all the mechanical issues. As a new boat owner I must've been an easy mark. After identifying all of the issues, I approved the scope of repairs. When I went to pick it up I found that in addition to the items I'd approved, they'd given the trailer an unauthorized and very expensive brake job and were telling me I needed to replace all the tires. Found this shop from NextDoor when I needed a repair On our Mastercraft X30 in the PEAK of boating season! I crossed my fingers and contacted Bill here. He felt our pain and got us in right away. Without making any promises, he delivered BIG TIME! Neat & clean shop with phenomenal service. Probably the last boat repair shop of this caliber in the entire Bay Area. I believe Jim & Bill (& Jim's wife) are terrific people! I am confused by some of the negative reviews and odd stories from some reviewers, so I wanted to give my perspective.
I have been boating all of my life on the East Coast, but only started boating on the West Coast 5 years ago. In that time, we have stored both our new Nautique 230 & our used (15 years old) Nautique 196 ski boat. They took immaculate care of both - installed a killer sound system in our 230, and helped to clean-up, tune and fix the trailer of the used ski boat we purchased.

I don't know what happen with the two people that gave topside marine a bad rating, there's two sides to every story. What I do know is I've known Jim the owner for 30 years and he is the most meticulous, fair and thorough person I've ever met. Does not matter what it is that's just who he is as a person. I have sent many friends to him and I have had nothing but five star service stories from them. I would recommend topside marine for anything I needed for my boat, I hope this helps.

These guys must be crazy. We brought our 07 SV211 to them with some ballast issues. ( some of the tanks are intermittent and some of the gauges needed to be fixed.) This was all stuff we told them when we brought it in. They told us they would take a look at it and get back to us.
However after a month and a week of holding the boat they called us to tell us that the pumps werent working and that they arent Certified Nautique Dealers so that cant fix it. If you like your boat please don't ever store your boat at this place!
We stored our boat at this place last summer. The two gentlemen running the place seem to be OK guys. I had this gut feeling I should have moved my boat when they called me and told me they would be raising the price of my boat from 202 to over $230 which makes them more expensive than most of the average places which are a lot nicer to store your boat and a much nicer areas.
So I go to pick up my boat on a Sunday morning only to find that my $1400.00 boat cover had been torn on both sides of my boat. I mean WOW! SO

I contacted Bill this month (yikes! One month before the season kicks off) and he was fast,responsive and did a great job. He was very knowledgeable, kept me fully informed of what was going on and I can't say enough great things about him or his shop.
I would highly recommend Topside and would go back there in a heartbeat!

I wanted to update my 2010 Review. We have now been with Topside since 2008, and (sadly) just sold our second boat -- a 2006 Malibu 23LSV. The Buyer will keep the boat at Topside, and I expect that he will enjoy the same level of terrific customer service and true friendship that I have for 8 years! If you are lucky enough to get a spot to store your boat at Topside, you will have found boating nirvana. Pick up the boat with 24 hours notice (they put it out in the locked yard for you), use it, return it, done. If you need something looked at, they will do so, and then put it back into storage.

I've used Topside Marine twice, and I have been very happy with the customer service and the work they have done. I'm left with the feeling that Bill and Jim care about the work they are doing, and they want their customers to be fully informed of their options. Bill asks a lot of questions, to be thorough. That's good for me as relatively new boat owner. For the most recent service, it took a couple of weeks to complete things (it was a fairly long list, plus parts order). When it was all done, they went over the fixes and showed all the parts they replaced.

Nothing but great things to say about my experience. Bill is very thorough and knowledgeable about boats. They follow up regularly and most importantly, they did a spectacular job getting our boat back on the water. Rebuilt transmission on our Sanger V210, impeller change and other misc duties. Boat ran flawless. I would bring my boat back again.

Called to get a quote this morning on replacing bearing assemblies on a 2000# Pacific galvanized trailer. I proceeded to get a lecture on how there are so many different sizes/types of bearing assemblies out there that it would be impossible to get a quote. True about the sizes/types, but a 2000# Pacific galvanized trailer is about as standard as it comes. When inquiring about showing up with my trailer and the correct parts, I got an insulting response as to the "ignorance" of my suggestion that I just could not show up, I would have to make an appointment. I found Topside Marine on the Monster Tower website of their preferred dealers.
I'm installing the tower myself, and I went back to Topside Marine a few times to seek materials, and general advice on doing this task.
Both Bill and Jim are very nice and knowledgable people. As marine shops are seemingly becoming harder to find these days, I was very happy with my experience here.
All in all, they took about 2 hours of their time when they didnt have to to help me out and give me the proper advice to get my tower on.
If I ever need any service or work on my boat, definitely coming back here

This morning I called this shop to get a quote on installing a tower on my boat and instead of them giving me a range of the price, he laughed at me and asked me if this was a trick question. Very unprofessional. I'm shocked this place has any business. Oh and I was hung up on at the end. DON'T TRUST THIS PLACE WITH YOUR BOAT!!

Bill and Jim are very personable. The shop was very very clean and they had many boats that they were working on. Also they had lots of boats there that were being stored too.
The reason for my visit was because they are a WetSounds dealer. Sadly they haven't started to build their demo room so you can't hear the audio they sell. But what they did for me was the next best thing..... they allowed me to listen and see the work they have put into their customers boats. WOW
The installations were top notch. Very professional and clean. 2 thumbs up for TopSide Marine.

Went in to inquire about a few services and couldn't get a straight answer. Instead the person behind the counter gave me a lecture on boat electronics. The person behind the counter spoke to me as if I was an idiot. They might be great for storage, but I won't be doing business here. They only got 1 star from me because of my experience.
