If you have a private drinking water well in Massachusetts, you probably have questions about what could contaminate your water and how you would know. The federal government has no authority to regulate the safety of private drinking water wells and neither do many state government agencies. In Massachusetts, the responsibility for safe drinking water from private wells usually falls on the homeowner.
High levels of lead can be harmful to the health of young children, infants, and some adults, especially pregnant women. The symptoms of high levels of lead aren't obvious to the average person, and they often develop over a long period of time. Prolonged high levels of lead can cause severe brain and nerve damage, slowed growth, high blood pressure, pregnancy difficulties, as well as many other maladies.
For a general survey of your drinking water quality, the standard drinking water test package may be for you. You can add any individual parameter that you need to this package. Adding coliform bacteria is recommended for well water as your water should be tested annually for bacteria. The sampling kit will include everything you need to collect a sample of your water, including containers, sampling guidelines, and sampling.
If you have both a private well and a septic system in Massachusetts, you probably have to comply with Title 5 of the State Environmental Code, 310 CMR 15.000. The Massachusetts environmental code regulates how close your drinking water well can be to your septic system. For complete details about Title 5 please visit the MA DEP website.
Microbes, such as bacteria and viruses, are the contaminants with the greatest chance of reaching levels high enough to cause acute health effects. You cannot detect bacteria in drinking water by sight, smell, or taste; you must test your water to detect coliform bacteria. Northeast Environmental Laboratory, Inc. (NEL, Inc.) is certified by the Massachusetts DEP to test drinking water samples for bacteria.
