Services
The story of Western Orthopaedics began when Foster Matchett, MD moved to Denver in 1938 after completing his orthopaedic training at Massachusetts General Hospital, Philadelphia Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, and Temple University. He came to Denver and joined Drs. Atha Thomas and Charles Sevier in the Republic Building downtown.
The Western Orthopaedic and Rose Medical Center Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship is focused on providing an orthopedic fellow with the opportunity to develop critical diagnostic and treatment skills to excel as a shoulder and elbow surgical specialist. The fellowship is based at a high-volume practice in Denver, Colorado.
Dr. Fred F. Teal retired from Western Orthopedics in June of 2006. He received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. After completing his internship and residencies in Denver, Dr. Teal served in the United States Air Force. In 1969 he joined forces with our founding partners, Dr. Foster Matchett and Dr. Charles Brown.
Since 1979, physicians from Western Orthopaedics have maintained a clinical outreach presence in western Kansas. Currently, we service the orthopedic clinical needs of patients at clinics in Atwood, Colby, Goodland, and Quinter. We have providers specializing in sports medicine, joint replacement, spine, hand, foot & ankle, and shoulder & elbow surgery that travel to various clinic location in Kansas with availability every week.
At Western Orthopaedics, some of our surgeons utilize Physician Assistants or PA's, as part of their team. Our PA's are well trained and work closely with our surgeons to ensure that you are provided with the highest level of care and compassion. Their role is to extend the reach and service of our surgeons.

I had a botched right knee replacement and went to Dr. Traina for a second opinion. He did a revision surgery which was very successful and recently replaced my left knee. Surgery was a success with little pain. He has given me my life back. He is an awesome surgeon!!! I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Traina and his PA Andrew Cleveland to anyone needing shoulder or knee surgery.

Dr. Hatzidakis operated on my shoulder for rotator cuff tears on 1/22/21. I needed extensive repairs and couldn't be happier with my results! It has almost been a year and I am playing tennis better than ever, swimming and able to work, which involves a lot of lifting, without any problems. My shoulder is very strong and feels better than ever! Dr. Hatzidakis is an amazing surgeon, his PAs (Rose Christensen, Dina) are great and very knowledgeable and office staff and assistants are so friendly, especially Mike and Luvia! I also had a great experience with my surgery at Midtown Surgical Center.

Efficient, knowledgeable, courteous, thorough and respectful. The P.A and doctor were highly organized and efficient, giving me the information that I needed for a course of treatment that is best suited my age and condition.. Dr. White was recommended by my physical therapist, who said Dr. White wouldn't recommend surgery unless it was clearly the best option. I was delighted to hear, based on my x-rays and physicaL evaluation. that total hip replacement isn't necessary for me. Instead I received a steroid shot and was encouraged to continue physical therapy. My hip is not bothering me at this

From the moment I met Dr Hatzidakis, I knew I’d made the right decision in choosing the surgeon who would replace my shoulder. Very professional, and very personable, Dr Hatzidakis immediately formed a very individual plan for my care and surgical intervention. He patiently listened to all my concerns and addressed each with knowledge and understanding. I found the office personnel to be equally knowledgeable and professional, responding to any questions I had. I would highly recommend Dr. Hatzidakis for shoulder intervention.
Thank you so much,
Mary

Old school providers who don't stay up to date with developments in their field and have 1980s patient communication standards.
Story: I got a splint put on at SCL health sports med for a boxers break and got referred here to get a consult to see if I needed surgery. Dr Hatz is technically very good. My shoulder healed well. He is polite but felt something is off about him. He touches when he doesn't need to explain something to the PA. Then he thanks you. Why would a doctor feel the need to thank you after an exam? The first time I met him he picked up the pendent on my necklace to look at it. You can look at something without touching it. He has a boundary issue. Creepy.
I have seen a few orthopedic docs for issues over the years. I know what is appropriate. Will not be back. There are too many other orthopedic offices to chose from in Denver.

I was referred to Dr. Traina by a friend and he did not disappoint! I came to him with chronic knee problems and, what was supposed to be, a second opinion. With 5 minutes he had diagnosed my problem before even opening my MRI images and then pointed out the issues on the MRI -something my previous doctor had never done and I had been seeing him for over a year. Once I saw it, it seemed plain as day. Experience counts and Dr. Traina is one of the best. HIGHLY recommend.

WARNING! ...FRAUD!..Surprise bills long after your first and only appointment. Dr. Birney had me go and get a MRI that cost over $2000.00 then I tried to contact this office to see when Dr Birney wanted me to come back and get the results of my MRI, never heard back from the Dr or the office, was completely ignored by the Dr and the office and then months down the road get a surprise bill from them! Be careful when doing business with this clinic, would definitely not recommend!

Not only was the whole experience not that pleasant, there were MANY SURPRISE BILLS, and refusal to tell me the pricing of anything up front or telling me one thing and then sending me an invoice for another. I would constantly ask for costs and they would refuse to tell me until after the appointment.
Besides the poor experience with billing, I was told I would go back to my normal activity after my wrist surgery. I spent 6 months in rehab, and was told I was healing faster and better than expected only to have the issue arise again a year later. So, $4000 and 8 months of my life and I&apos

Another great reverse shoulder replacement performed by Dr. Hatzidakis and his team of fantastic individuals. Both shoulders completed with fantastic results. Caught a case of the hiccups after the surgeries and PA Deena was very helpful helping me get rid of them. Even called a few days after to follow up and ensure they were gone.

Pretty disappointing experience with dr nagamani & PT hogan Jones.
Dr nagamani was on his phone texting for most of my eval and I probably spoke with him for 5 minutes total before he took off...
Next I went to PT where I received mediocre at best care, and was hit with all kinds of additional charges after my copay that were unexpected and I was not told about in advance . Normally I'd expect to be notified if there's going to be a 55$ charge for "manual therapy" which consisted of a foot rub that applied about as much pressure as a toddler could do....

I have spent years being bounced from primary care to physical therapy, rheumatology, and others, but can finally say I've landed with a specialist who can actually give me definitive information about my knee! This office is outstanding. They're efficient and timely in scheduling and an incredibly well oiled machine if you need things like x-rays. Dr. Holmes is thorough and compassionate and truly educated me on what is happening in my joints. In the hour I was in that office, I was given more concrete information including diagnosis and prognosis for my knee than I have been able to

This is a review for both the surgeons and physical therapy team. The short review: This team is awesome, and I highly recommend them!
I dislocated my shoulder twice before I got it diagnosed (hills-sachs and bankart lesion). I visited Western Ortho for a second opinion. I first went to a different ortho group, and the surgeon I saw there was very pro-surgery (not all that surprising), but he didn't even *mention* physical therapy as an alternative. I was not ready to sign up for a surgery with a 6 month recovery time without a second opinion, hence visiting Western Ortho.

Pre and "During" COVID-19 review.
I've been a patient of Western Orthopaedics for quite a few years now, I'd say over 6 years. I've seen three of the doctors here, and I wouldn't go anywhere else! I've seen Dr. White for my left hip (replaced 3 years ago now), Dr. Hatzidakis for my left shoulder (worked on 5 years ago), and Dr. Bazaz for my right knee replacement, 8 months ago. Yes, I had my right knee replaced at the end of February, 2020, about 1.5 weeks prior to the shut down of all elective surgeries everywhere, due to COVID-19. I got in just under the wire

I cannot say enough good things about Dr Hatzidakis and his team. I'm a 61 year old professional athlete who teaches Japanese swordsmanship all over the world. I had a shoulder replacement/biological resurfacing in Nov 2019 performed at Rose Medical Center. 6 months into recovery my improvement was drastic. 10 months in my shoulder is like it was in my 30s.
I originally approached the legendary Fred Matsen at UWMC about his Ream and Run procedure, but insurance issues closed the door on that avenue. I was then recommended to Dr Hatzidakis by another orthopedic doctor in Denver and am so

I have had the unfortunate pleasure to need Western Ortopedics more than once. Dr Bazzaz is awesome! Very personable and no nonsense. My surgery went smooth and I'm back doing all the adventures I live for. In fact... my knee is better now than it was before my recent knee injury! While I hope not to need their services ever again, I wouldn't consider anywhere else! I don't like to give reviews of 5, or 1 even, as they never seem to give great information... but... I can't give less than a 5. Ok... 4.9999999999. Now everyone's happy.

Update: I have since received a bill for an ankle brace I was offered during my second appointment (yes, the appointment during which Dr. Nagamani visually inspected my ankle and sent me on my way) which the office billed for $100, I kid you not. Meanwhile, I have called the billing office to dispute these charges and have not received so much as a phone call back.

I'm so happy. They are truly the best. Dr White is a world class hip surgeon. Teresa is amazing on point helping details and scheduling. Donna was pleasure to work with. Shawn, Dr White's right hand man was great and attentive. Unfortunately, I've had prior surgeries. None were as flawless as this one.
