Babes With Blades Theatre
Babes With Blades Theatre Company uses stage combat to tell stories that elevate the voices of underrepresented communities and dismantle the patriarchy. Through performance, script development, training and outreach, our ensemble creates theatre that explores the wide range of the human experience, and cultivates broader perspectives in the arts community and in society as a whole.

When the Duchess of Malfi dares to love honestly, openly, & defiantly, the men in her family do everything in their power to break those that would dare to flout the rules of a hetero-normative, patriarchal society. BWBTC takes on John Webster's classic revenge tragedy as only they can.

BWB began as a group of women who decided to create their own opportunities, in the hope of inspiring others to do likewise. Our initial showcase, in 1997, was conceived by founder Dawn "Sam" Alden as a two-day presentation of fights and monologues, intended to bring to the Chicago art world an awareness of the large number of stage combat-trained women it had in its midst whose talent was being consistently underutilized.
Three new scripts that utilize stage combat to tell stories of underrepresented communities and invite audiences to contribute to the plays' development!. Howard Street in the Rogers Park neighborhood, as well as streaming online. The Festival, which is free and open to the public is available online and in person, features readings of three scripts in the development process.
1. Fighting Words: This is our new play development program. It is an opportunity to have actors, directors, and select audiences weigh in on what you have written. Learn more about Fighting Words. 2. Joining Sword & Pen: JS&P is BWBTC's international playwriting competition, founded in 2005, initially to increase the number of quality scripts featuring fighting roles for women.
Fighting Words is BWBTC's script development program. Each season we choose three scripts for development and read each one aloud three times-first within the company, then with a small group of invited guests, and finally as part of a festival that includes all three plays. Discussions after each reading provide feedback for the playwrights, assisting them in developing their scripts further.
When the Joining Sword & Pen competition opens, the Babes publish an image which becomes part of the submitted scripts. These blind submissions are full length plays which are read by and voted on by the ensemble. The winner will participate in the development process in Fighting Words and then go to full production by the Babes.
