Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also called Physiatry (fizz-eye-a-tree), is a medical specialty emphasizing the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the muscles, bones and nerves. PM&R is one of 24 medical specialties certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Joseph Purcell established Redding Spine and Sports Medicine with Dr. Annie Davidson Purcell, in November of 2009. After growing up on Long Island, NY, he completed his undergraduate education at Wake Forest University in Health and Exercise Science. He then received his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Referred for nerve conduction study tests and it ended up costing $700 because the doctor suggested testing more areas than the initial charges covered. Unfortunately, the doctor suggested these additional areas in a very casual way ("the equipment is already out"), and it was not clear at all that the $400 already paid for the appointment would almost double because of it. We wouldn't be told about the additional costs until a bill came in the mail a month later. Lesson learned to ask about cost more often and more assertively with a high deductible health plan. Very impressed with how quick and efficient this office is! Staff was all very kind and informative, & was very transparent about what I would owe after my EMG which was very much appreciated! Dr. Purcell was very nice & explained what he was doing and what we were looking for and made me feel at ease despite the tiniest bit of discomfort. Overall really happy with my visit there!

These 2 doctors are top notch! When everyone else was giving me the run around, this tandom of Dr's got me in quickly. Correctly diagnosed my problem spot and thanks to them, I have complete relief in my lower back. They were really informative with relation to helping me understand my problem area. And w my well being. Took my Blue Shield insurance no problem. And have been a patient since 2017. Can't thank you enough. Keep up the great work.!

I was referred for a worker's comp issue and I found their care to be exceptional. I was seen promptly, the staff were friendly and helpful and the exam was very thorough. The results were back quickly and I never felt like my case was less important because it was worker's comp. I would definitely return there for care for other back and sports issues.

I have seen both Drs Annie & Joe Pursell. They were very professional and the care that they provide is first rate. They are compassionate and listened patiently to all my needs.
