Situated on Lake Allatoona, Atlanta Yacht Club has been home to small-boat pleasure and racing sailors for 70 years. From late March to November, our shores are dappled with one-design sailing craft heading out for an afternoon on the water with friends and family.
Whether they come for friendly competition, sailing classes, or just an opportunity to relax with a day on the lake, what binds our members and families to AYC is their commitment to the sport of sailing and their choice to spend their leisure time in an activity where everyone in the family can "play".The Atlanta Yacht Club is home to several active one-design racing fleets.

Services
Founded on the banks of Lake Allatoona in 1950, the Atlanta Yacht Club is a private, family oriented private sailing club promoting all aspects of the sport of sailing. Sailing fleets at AYC include Thistle, Snipe, Y-Flyer, Laser, EC-12 and, for our youngsters, 420 and Optimist dinghies. We hold regattas and sailboat races for these fleets most Saturday and Sunday afternoons from March through November.
Gilbert Beers and E.O. "Smitty" Smithfield, early member and founding father of the Atlanta Yacht Club, were partners in a Consulting and Construction firm that built dams for the Georgia Power Company. These sailing enthusiasts had seen pictures and heard stories of a one design yacht known as the Y-Flyer, designed by Alvin Youngquist - Commodore of the White Lake Yacht Club in Whitehall, Michigan.
The Motor Boat Fleet started as a support group for the sailing fleets to provide rescue and support boats for the racing programs and regattas. As time went on, it became a vehicle for constructing and maintaining covered motor boat docks and evolved into a full fleet with a year around program of social activities.
Membership in Atlanta Yacht Club is available to all persons with a racing sailboat or an interest in sailing. Preference is given to those interested in racing, especially in Thistles, Snipes, Y-Flyers, Flying Scots, and Lasers, since we have fleets of thirty or more of each of these boats already in existence at AYC.
If you answered "the better sailor, " then you've already grasped the concept of one-design sailing. If you answered "the faster boat owner, " you may take some convincing but we're willing to try! One-design sailors are committed to a concept -- sailboat racing is more fun and more competitive when sailing almost identical boats.
