Missing teeth can take a toll both on your emotional and your physical health. Those gaps in your smile are difficult to hide. Your speech is affected by missing teeth, as well as your ability to eat normally. You may find that foods that previously gave you no trouble have become difficult to chew, forcing you to forgo some of your favorite dishes.

Inflamed gums, a characteristic of gingivitis, is a relatively mild form of gum disease that causes discomfort and the gum tissue to appear red and swollen. When this condition goes untreated it can turn into periodontitis, a more advanced level of gum disease characterized by the gums separating from the teeth, tooth loss, and bone loss.

It happens slowly, so you may not notice it at first. Gum recession, when your gums begin to recede toward the jawbone, is a condition that sneaks up on you, and can have significant aesthetic and functional implications. Your teeth can appear unnaturally long and have an unsightly yellowish color near the gumline.

If your children are having speaking and eating difficulties, the cause could be their frenula, the thinly stretched tissues that secure the upper lip to the gums above the upper teeth and the tongue to the floor of the mouth.

With tongue tie, also called ankyloglossia, the frenulum under the tongue is too short, limiting speech development and possibly causing breastfeeding issues that can result in malnutrition, poor dentition, and a host of other significant issues.Lip tie occurs when the frenulum connected to the upper lip is undersized, also causing an array of problems with oral functioning.
