F A Highley Co Countertop Werks founder, Fred Highley, graduated from the New Mexico A&M in 1940. After enlisting in the Army Air Corps, he became a test pilot, reaching the rank of Lt. Colonel and flying 150 types of aircrafts. After returning to civilian life, he founded the F A Highley Company in 1946.
Originally specializing in the sale and installation of metal wall tiling, it eventually added floor coverings to its products. Fred was the salesman, installer, and collection agent, while his wife, Lorene, handled all office work as bookkeeper and receptionist. Fred retired in 1984, turning the business over to his son, Larry.
