If you are seeing the doctor for a knee, hip, ankle or back problem - wear or bring a pair of shorts. The knee joint functions as close to a hinge as any joint in the body. The femur and tibia make up the weightbearing surfaces and are covered by cartilage the keeps the joint moving smoothly. The shoulder is a ball and socket joint built for motion. There are 2 main types of cartilage: articular cartilage which is the shiny, smooth white coating in all joints and meniscal cartilage, which is the rubbery cushion in between a joint.
