When I lived in New York City, I was dating a girl and one day, she mentioned that she needed a bench for her apartment. So naturally - having never built anything in my life - I told her I'd make one for her. That bench taught me a lot. I realized how much I loved working with my hands, creating something from nothing, and that if I wanted to do this again, I had a lot to learn.
In my spare time, I began taking woodworking classes in Brooklyn. Woodworking slowly started occupying more of my time. Not long after, we decided to pack our bags and head to Boulder, Colorado for more space and more trees. I attended the Red Rocks School of Woodworking and spent all of my spare time in my garage shop.

Inspired by a traditional hand-carved fruit canoe that I spotted during our honeymoon in South Africa, the wood for my version began its life as a beam that had been part of a church cross and was rescued on its way to the landfill. Wanting to experiment with textures, it took almost all of my hand tools to get the right shape and smoothness - many hours of grinding, rasping, carving and sanding.

Mr. Ridings and his company Rooted Furniture is perhaps one of the most professional organizations, especially for one that manufactures special furniture, that I have ever been involved with. Nick is a true artist with wood. Our dining room table is amazing -- something we will keep forever. I loved Nick's process where I showed him several pictures of ideas and he came back with multiple design options for the table. Once we settled on an overall design he offered choices for many details like edge bevel thickness, types of joints, grain patterns, stain colors, etc. After we agreed on those details he created a scale model of the table for us to review before final sign-off. Through his process we were able to make choices/adjustments that ultimately led to the final product which
