Good oral hygiene eliminates bacterial microfilm (plaque) that builds up daily in the mouth. Without good hygiene, plaque will accumulate. It will eventually harden, becoming tartar, and that will begin the process of gum disease. The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis is a reversible process; if detected early, it can be successfully treated, restoring the mouth to a healthy condition.
Periodontal disease (gum disease) is an all too common problem. Approximately 50% of adults over 30 in the U.S. have some form of gum disease. This percentage increases to 70% in adults over 65. In the earliest stage, gum disease is classified as gingivitis. This condition is easily reversible by a professional dental hygiene visit and improved home care.
Composite resin is a tooth-colored dental restorative (filling) material. It is made from a combination of a resin base and an inorganic filler. This material is used to "fill" in missing areas of a tooth damaged by decay or fracture. This material has almost exclusively taken the place of amalgam ("silver" or metal) fillings used in dentistry for many years.
A crown is a dental restoration that has multiple uses. It is a solution for more severe tooth problems caused by accidents, fractures, wear and tear, and decay. A crown fully surrounds the tooth and is most often used on teeth too damaged for a filling to restore correctly. They are also used to complete dental implant treatment.
