Conventional flooring or crawl-space foundations utilize block and beam piers to support the home's subfloor. Block and beam support runs perpendicular to the floor joist providing strength to the interior home. These piers are positioned 6 to 8 feet apart depending on timber sizing and the area to be supported.
Foundation blocks are mortared and laid to create foundations for crawl-spaces, slabs, and basement walls. These blocks by design are porous and have a high water absorption and retention ratio unless filled with concrete. HydroGuard, Inc. utilizes a specialized mix of raw materials to produce a grout.
Concrete slab foundations can settle and eventually crack. The causes can be vast but usually involve fill dirt settlement, moisture issues, or water leaks. Driveways and sidewalks are in a class of their own and are often associated with problems in landscaping, tree roots, water drainage, soil expansion or contraction, or lack of compaction of the fill dirt.
Because a dry crawl-space or slab is most desirable for your home, it is important to promote water movement away from the footing. This can be accomplished by building up dirt around the exterior foundation to prevent pooling and absorption of groundwater. Another option is to develop a yard swale in locations with hillsides.
By definition, a French Drain is a trench filled with gravel containing a perforated pipe that redirects surface water and groundwater away from an area. The perforated pipe along the bottom quickly vents water that seeps down through the upper gravel layer. HydroGuard utilizes French drain applications to address basement wall leaks, crawl-space moisture, and pressure against retaining walls.
