Heat is always transferred from the medium with higher temperature to the medium with lower temperature. All three heat transfer methods have their application fields. For example a mold is best heated by an inserted heater (conduction), while glass can be bent using infrared heaters.
For insertion heaters, make sure the dimensions of the heater / groove / slot are machined according to heaters specs (temperature, watt density) For cartridge heaters, you can choose a split sheath design to eliminate air gaps. For heaters mounted directly onto a surface (like flexible heaters, strip heaters) make sure the surface is prepared accordingly and the heaters are mounted correctly.

Galileo is credited with inventing the thermometer, but it had no scale. Many thermometers has since then be conceived, but none of them was universally recognized. We know today about 10 different scales, five of them pretty well known (Fahrenheit, Celsius, Kelvin, Rankine and Reamur); but only three of them are widely used today.
There are a couple ways to maximize existing heater performance. If these don't solve your issues, you may have to look into redesigning your heating process. Contamination (build-up or scaling on immersion heaters) is the most frequent cause of heater failure because it entraps the heat within the heater and leads to burn-out.
There are many different sheath materials available. The most important factor is the material or fluid that will be in direct contact with the heater. In many situations, different sheath materials could be used. But in some instances, you don't have a choice to what sheath material needs to be used.
In a closed loop temperature control system there is a constant feedback from the heater (or the part) through the which then in turns through a to maintain set point. This is sometimes also called a feed back control. In an open system, there is no such automatic feedback. No feedback requires constant attention from the operator or the result may be one you don't want.
