Mainescape
When Don Paine graduated from Syracuse University in 1977 with a degree in landscape architecture, he knew exactly where he wanted to be. His family had long-established roots in the coastal Maine town of Sedgwick, and in short order he started a design/build landscape business in the nearby town of Blue Hill and named it Mainescape.

Since then, Don and Althea Paine have built Mainescape into a one-stop garden center for local gardeners and pet owners, as well as a community gathering place for events and locally grown produce. Stop in for a locally baked pastry and wander through the fresh local produce and our large selection of plants, rugs, pet supplies, soils, fertilizers, seeds, tools, and pots.
Services
The season has started with a bang. Plants, products and customers are everywhere and deliveries are rolling in daily. We are still asking shoppers to wear masks and maintain distancing when inside our shop and glasshouse. You are welcome to come inside and wander our various rooms of gardening supplies, houseplants, pet food and gifts.
We primarily sell organic fertilizers, with the exception of some 25 lb bags of 5-10-5, 5-10-10 and 10-10-10. We began selling North Country Organics fertilizers, from Vermont, about 35 years ago, and can't recommend them highly enough. Whether using it on your vegetable gardens, perennials, trees & shrubs, fruit trees and berries, or on your lawns you will see dramatic improvements.
We've been carrying premium pet food, supplies and toys for about 20 years. We have always had cats who lived at our shop, and for the past 8 years our little cock-a-poo, Abby Rose, has been our official greeter. It just made sense that we would sell pet products! We welcome people and their dogs (on a leash) to come in and browse and enjoy a treat.

Beautiful place that is well organized. Wonderful customer service that was so helpful in answering questions and being honest about how some plants are more fickle for the area. Great variety and selection too of many things, felt they offered even a great variety of non common shrubs. Had 4 different varieties of smoke bush to choose from even! Prices are on the higher side but I much rather support a local mom and pop than a big box store. Some seasonal farm stand products available as well. Definitely worth popping in!

I love this shop my mom and I visit weekly in the summer. Althea usually has harder to find plants and if she doesn't have them she can help you locate what you are looking for. I always buy my pots here. I have a house plant addiction and her pots are gorgeous and cheap! They also have yummy snacks and drinks, soils, seeds and such.

A beautiful place to shop, this all season shop has pots, rugs, local foods and local gifts. From scented moisturizer, to dog toys, to children's books. The cashiers can be kind but not very talkative. Sometimes they're not at the register and you have to look around for them... but no matter because the building and green house is BEAUTIFUL. If you're looking for a quick snack or a nice place to chill: here's the place.

Excellent selection of plants. It was hard to find anyone to help with questions and cashing out took longer than expected.

I've been shopping here for a nice variety of seedlings, plants and gardening supplies for years. Now they have a wonderful farm stand with amazing produce, and yummy pies.
On Saturdays seasonally, they have a farmers market in the large new greenhouse with prepared food. Plus the incredible produce from Elliot Coleman's Four Season Farm. The owner, Althea, is always friendly.
