While asbestos is no longer used today due to the health risks, workers may still face exposure from asbestos that has not been properly removed and disposed of. Workers in the following types of industries were often exposed to asbestos: mining, insulation, shipbuilding, pipe fitting, plumbing, power generation, construction, textiles, auto repair, railroads, and appliance repair.
The asbestos attorneys at Brayton Purcell, L.L.P., have protected the legal rights of asbestos victims, including injured workers and their families, for more than 30 years. We seek damages for pain, suffering, loss of wages and medical expenses. We also pursue compensation for families who have lost a loved one due to asbestos exposure.
Asbestos is the generic name for six naturally occurring minerals that have been used in commercial products for their strength, flexibility, low electrical conductivity, and resistance to heat and chemicals. It is composed of silicon, oxygen, hydrogen, and various metals. Asbestos can be divided into two basic groups, serpentine, and amphibole, which differ in their physical characteristics.
Asbestos exposure at a job site is a major health problem. Your chance of getting an asbestos-related disease depends on certain conditions called risk factors. The first risk factor is how much asbestos was in the air you breathed, or the "concentration." The second risk factor is the cumulative length of all exposures or "duration."
Asbestos exposure can cause serious diseases, including mesothelioma and asbestos lung cancer. If you breathe asbestos fibers into your lungs, some of the fibers will be deposited in the air passages and on the cells that make up your lungs. Some fibers remain trapped in the lungs, causing severe respiratory damage.
