IMS is one of the Western world's oldest and most-respected meditation retreat centers. We are dedicated to providing a spiritual refuge for all who seek freedom of mind and heart. Our experienced teachers offer guidance in Buddhist meditations known as vipassana (insight) and metta (lovingkindness).
While the context is the Buddha's teachings, these practices are universal. They help to develop awareness and compassion in ourselves, giving rise to greater peace and happiness in the world. Our two adjacent retreat facilities - the Retreat Center and the Forest Refuge - are set among almost 400 secluded wooded acres in the quiet country of central Massachusetts.

IMS is a spiritual refuge for all who seek freedom of mind and heart. We offer meditation retreats and online programs rooted in the Early Buddhist teachings of ethics, concentration and wisdom. These practices help develop awareness and compassion in ourselves, giving rise to greater peace and happiness in the world.
When IMS first opened its doors, we aspired to create a meditation space where all those seeking freedom of mind and heart felt welcomed. Over time, however, it became clear and obvious that our community was not in balance. With people of color largely absent, and LGBTIQ people and other marginalized groups unacknowledged, our centers did not reflect the reality of our world in all its diversity and cultural richness.
During 2019, there were 276 days of teacher-led courses offered at the Retreat Center, and 365 days for personal retreats offered at the Forest Refuge. A total of 53 teachers, including 3 monastics from the ordained sangha, plus 25 assistants taught the Buddha's priceless teachings throughout this period.
Valentine's Day, 2021, marks 45 years since IMS first opened its doors. Back in 1976, we had no idea that tens of thousands of meditators would come to our Retreat Center and Forest Refuge, letting go of the busyness of daily life to explore their minds and open their hearts. We are grateful to each and every one of you for the steps you are taking toward awakening, and for bringing the fruits of your practice back to your communities.
