Pilates is a full-body workout designed to create long, lean muscles while improving strength, posture, flexibility, coordination and balance. Developed in the early 20th century by Joseph H. Pilates, the exercises emphasize smooth, flowing movements driven by the core muscles - what Joe called the "Powerhouse" - including the abdominals, back, pelvic floor, inner/outer thighs and glutes.
Specifically the pain from multiple neck, back and shoulder injuries (a car accident, sports injuries, and concussions among them), worsened by long work days at a desk. First it brought me to tears and then to Pilates.
After years of working with one specialist after another and trying seemingly everything else with little success, I was amazed at how quickly I not only found relief from pain but so many additional benefits: I built strength, toned and reshaped my body, improved my coordination and posture (growing almost a full inch due to spine decompression), and regained a sense of ease and delight in my body.

Sick of feeling sick and tired? Or maybe it's not so bad; you've gotten used to a perpetually tight neck, tweaky shoulder or achey low back but dream of living pain & pain-killer free. Maybe nothing's "wrong" per se but you want better - more energy, to feel stronger, to push back and deny the affects of time and age.
When you can't make it to the studio, you can still practice with me online - anywhere; anytime you'd like! I am providing these videos on a donation basis with the hope that they provide an opportunity to ground and bring more ease back into your stiff joints and restless mind. One of the many great things about Pilates & yoga, is how little it takes to get a great full body workout.
Some days you're just not going to make it into the studio. One of the (many!) great things about Pilates and yoga is how little it takes to get a great full body workout. A quiet spot and a comfortable surface is all you need to get started.

I am 72 years old and, as a result of many, orthopedic surgeries ( hip, knees, ankles) over the last ten years or so, I have issues, specifically balance and walking. I have been seeing Lisa for pilates twice a week for about the past six months and she is perfect for me. Initially Lisa observed as I was evaluated by a physical therapist who noted my challenges and made recommendations. For me, she is the perfect combination of task master and cheerleader. She pushes me (gently) to do and be my best, all the while cheering my progress and accomplishments. Lisa is a great listener and works with

Don't know where to begin. I had awful issues with, back, leg, hip, knee and feet due to 2.5 total knee replacements in 26 months. Leg atrified to point of needing to wear special shoes in order to stand even. After 5 years I was introduced to Lisa Day and Pilates. Who would have thunk I'd be doing Pilates, farthest though from my mind. However let me tell you this, For the first time in years I can now stand, sit and walk with very little pain. No more drugs... None of this would be possible if it were not for Lisa and her in-depth knowledge how the body works and and what's needed to heal. She

As someone that was feeling intimidated by Pilates and all the machines, Lisa immediately made me feel comfortable with the process and even come to enjoy it. Lisa has a wonderful attitude and always takes good care to respect and protect my old injuries. After working with her for several months, I feel much more open, balanced and limber. I am grateful to Lisa for inspiring and challenging me to strive for optimal health and fitness. She has quite a gift!

Lisa is an absolutely stellar pilates and yoga teacher. Her awareness of how the body moves makes her amazing for anyone with an injury. I highly recommend her if you are hestitant in getting back into exercise. Her careful questioning of how your body is feeling at each session and how she always remembers former "sticky" spots is only part of what makes her such a great professional. Highly recommend!

Lisa has an authenticity that far surpasses most yoga and pilates instructors. She speaks from an internal deep wisdom and care from her clients. I love Lisa's classes and highly recommend them to everyone. She's wise and fun, knows so much about working with injuries and meet you right where you're at. Take a class with her! You won't be disappointed.

I always learn something new from Lisa, and she is always conscientious of her students' and clients' physical conditions and helps modify any poses to accommodate those conditions. She is very hands-on, which is exceptionally helpful--sometimes you just don't know when you're doing something wrong or when just a minor change in a pose could make a massive difference in the way you feel. Lisa sees these things and always makes her classes a positive, uplifting experience. I have met few people more genuine and caring. You won't be disappointed in her classes.

I was scared of pilates. Somehow I thought it was going to be really aggressive and hard. Lisa's kind and steady personality made me willing to try it. In a single session I felt so many new muscles. As a yoga teacher of 10 years this was mind-blowing. Pilates has since been a healing modality for my sciatica.
Lisa is very mindful of my injuries and develops sessions toward figuring out what my body needs to strengthen. She also manages to roll with my outbursts of laughter and excitement when I discover entirely new feelings in my body. I love Lisa and highly recommend her.

Lisa is an absolutely amazing instructor! Whether she is teaching yoga or pilates, Lisa's supportive presence and wealth of knowledge makes such a difference. Lisa doesn't just give you tools - she helps you build them on your own. I would recommend Lisa to anyone - from beginners to advanced practitioners. Florida is lucky to have her!

I first tried Lisa's yoga class - I loved her gentle corrections to my form and reminders to lift my rib cage, relax my shoulders and of course to breathe. Even though she gives gentle corrections on form - in no way would I say her classes are easy. Her corrections usually eases joint discomfort and helps target the intended muscle even more. Her class got me loose, limber, and sweating. Plus I was sore the following day. I liked Lisa as a teacher so much I tried a Pilates private session. O wow. She targeted muscles I didn't know I had. Plus she got those stubborn places l never knew how to get

Lisa is a gem of a teacher. She has great informative cues and gives the best assists in yoga. I've also taken one on one pilates sessions with her and she was wonderful at catering to my needs and challenging my body. All the while having lots of fun! She has overall a great understanding of the body and really skillful hands. A group class with her is already a treat but a one on one session is definitely a worthy splurge.

Lisa is one of those people you instantly feel comfortable around. I first met Lisa when I assisted during her teacher training, and it has been impressive to watch her evolution from a good yoga teacher to an exceptional yoga teacher and pilates instructor. I'm klutzy by nature and a bit daunted by all the pilates props and machines, but Lisa has a way of explaining everything clearly. Her good-natured style helped me feel at ease and comfortable working at my own level, with plenty of challenge too. After a private pilates session with Lisa, my often tweaky hip felt some amazing relief. Whether

No matter what kind of day I'm having, I know that being in Lisa's yoga class will help me reset. Her cheerful demeanor and welcoming personality have a way of getting me to step away from whatever stresses I'm dealing with to be present in class. Lisa's teaching is tender, great for both a beginner and someone who practices regularly.
When I first started going to her classes, I might have described them as a bit easier that others. That's not true. She teaches in a way that helped me be at ease in some pretty difficult poses, and made what that seemed impossible to

Lisa Day is one of the best yoga teachers I have met in my eight years of practicing yoga. I have never taken a class with a teacher who is so engaged and intuitive, helping you connect to your practice in the most enthusiastic and kind-hearted way. Although her sessions are deeply meaningful and therapeutic, she never loses touch with her lighthearted spirit, helping you to shrug off any challenges you encounter along the way with her unique sense of playfulness. I always recommend her class to everyone I meet who is looking for a new and therapeutic yoga experience. She is a gem!

Tried yoga for the first time years ago and found it difficult but challenging. I thought Pilates would be similar but easier because it using a machine with little resistance. Typical guy brain. Pilates was not easier but it was still challenging in different ways. It requires incredible focus, learning your body in detail. It has helped me workout better at the gym by being able to focus better on specific areas. Lisa has been incredible with teaching Teresa and I, never letting us cheat ourselves. It's been fun learning along side Lisa as she has been learning to teach as well. She keeps

I have never truly considered yoga being for me. I am not flexible, skinny or fond of bright colored wild printed fabrics. I do workout, stretch and just happen to look good in black, I might be flexible if my pudgy parts didn't get in the way.
But I did try Lisa Day's Candlelight Forrest Yoga Class at Innerstellar Pilates & Yoga Studio in Berkeley and LOVED IT! Lisa helped me find ways to makes the poses work for me and the level I am currently at. Everyone there modified - it was encouraging to see props, blocks and different variations. Plus, I never felt judged, stressed

I've come to know Lisa as an instructor at Innerstellar Yoga. She is absolutely delightful. She has such a sparkly energy, all of her classes are infused with a sense of playfulness and curiosity about our bodies. They are lighthearted, and we are encouraged to try (and possibly fail!) and look at where we are with love and acceptance rather than judgment.

I'm not one that feels comfortable in a group setting. Always the one in the back, observing more than doing. Stay in shape with my elliptical and free weights. However - after recently breaking my hip - that's not possible. With Lisa's encouragement and support, I tried Pilates with her. Fabulous !!! So patient and informative. There were things I could do with her help and modification, working around my injury. Can hardly wait until I can actually do more with Lisa to get back my strength and confidence. Highly recommend her Pilates and/or Yoga classes ! She is very

Lisa is a hidden gem of the East Bay yoga community. Her classes are inspirational, and with time she can guide you into that pose you never thought possible. Her attention to injury supports you in such a way that you can let go of pain and feel into the joy of a pose. What makes Lisa truly stand out (and creates a fan base that go out of their way to attend every class they can), is her ability to connect with her students and share her sparkle. Her energy is unparalleled.
I especially recommend Lisa to those who are afraid to go into yoga or Pilates, doubly so if it is an injury or body image
