In 1964, Mr. West hired Ferd Heckle, a high school student, to work part time loading and unloading feed. In 1970 Ferd became a partner in the business and in 1986 purchased the business when Mr. West retired. Through the years, Ferd has made it a point to hire high school students for part time and summer work.

About a week ago we bought some herbs and pepper plants from this location. Planted within 24 hrs in good compost. Unfortunately, all my basil plants (two sweet and one Thai) and my pepper plants are rotting. All the cucumber/squash/zucchini at this location were moldy as well. The place has huge variety, and maybe my experience was an isolated one, but I don’t think we will be returning and will look elsewhere for healthy plants.

We have several excellent nurseries in Shelby co. I go to all of them! After my experience @ Dan west 64 hwy, it's now my go to place! Not only did they have the unusual jap. Maple I was looking for, it was an amazing price, excellent quality. But how about 5+ stars for Service! Hope I'm giving correct name. Ricky.. thank you so much! This young man asked me how far I was driving. Loaded tree, carefully secured fragile limbs & sprayed leaves to avoid wind burn. Wow! I even did as he instructed.. drove 45mph Lol

I always look for vegetables and flowers here that I can't find anywhere else. Nice selection and very healthy. Pumpkins and squash in the fall are beautiful, ghost, pink, grey and orange...
Big box stores tend to stay with old favorites like petunias and begonias. Where are the more expensive and unusual?
I don't need my hand held since I grew up in a wholesale retail nursery. I just grab a cart and go. Checkout is fast and efficient.

This last visit will be my last one. I'm tired of the rude employees. When someone walks into a nursery you can usually tell if they are the experienced gardener going straight for the plants they need. The last two times I have been here the young lady outside watering the plants just looked at me & turned around. You know that vibe a person gives you when they don't want to be bothered? She had it! So Finally found someone to talk to & got what I needed. This last visit the same thing happened I made two laps around the nursery the girl looks at me like don't ask me nothing
