Located on a short dirt road in Coventry, Connecticut, Topmost offers plants for sale from the greenhouse in May and June. Nurtured in McEnroe certified organic potting mix and transplanted into quart pots, they are never exposed to chemicals or pesticides. Seed is sourced from GMO-free companies, preferably organic when available.
We will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 5 thereafter. That's a couple of weeks too early to plant annuals and tender perennials here in zone 5b, but stop by to visit, as we love to talk plants. We accept cash and checks, not plastic, however. Topmost is owned by Carole Miller and operated with the help of family and friends.

Services
Topmost Herb Farm was born in the late 1980s as a wholesale supplier of certified organic medicinal herbs to small companies producing herbal medicines. Markets change as does the economy and a bit of reinventing has been necessary over the years. Organic certification was surrendered some years ago, but the practice has never ended.
Heirlooms are open-pollinated, which means nature does the work, rather than a plant breeder, and their seeds can be saved, assuring another generation of the exact same plant. They are old-time varieties whose seeds have been saved and shared through multiple generations of families and friends. Their foremost qualities are outstanding flavor and high nutrition.

I have been buying my tomatoes from Topmost Herb Farm for a number of years. Every year has been great and I have changed some varieties over the years, all have been successful. One year I had a Mortage Lifter that weighed in over two pounds (and was delicious). HAve had good luck with Rutgers, San Marzano the most, but ocassionally will pick something different and never been disappointed. Even the year that we had the tomato blight the plants from Topmost were great.

If you like growing your own herbs or heirloom tomatoes, this neat little greenhouse on a windy dirty road in Coventry is a great place to get some plants to start with. The amount of Heirloom varieties she has is really over the top (check the list on her website - with descriptions of the heirlooms) - and they are affordable!
At a store like WholeFoods you will pay like $4+ a pound for a nice heirloom tomato (they usually weigh over a pound!), the plants are $3.75 here .. with a little care you could grow a couple hundred dollars worth of tomatoes for $15.
