Founded in 1907 by Dr. George Alexander Kohut, Kamp was originally created as a refuge from the heat and pollution of the city. Dr. Kohut was a literary scholar and educator who ran a boys' school in New York ("Kohut's School for Boys"), and was convinced an outdoor experience in the Maine wilderness would be very healthy and character building for his students.
Our mission is to provide a safe, warm, inviting, exciting, fun place where children feel accepted for who they are and supported as they are challenged to become the best they can be.
We strive to achieve an unparalleled quality of camp experience, providing young people with the opportunity to grow both emotionally and skillfully in a wholesome, healthy, respectful, kind, positive, tolerant and naturally beautiful setting, thereby acquiring a lifetime of skills, friendships, and memories. At Kamp Kohut, carefully orchestrated attention to detail helps ensure each child has a successful camp experience.

At Kamp Kohut, we have an elective program. That means you can choose your own schedule each week. There are 50+ different activity choices! Before you come to camp, you'll complete an activity sign up form at home with your parents and send it back to us before the summer starts. Your schedule will be all ready to go when you get to camp, full of six activities from your top ten list!
Kamp Kohut is a uniform camp. We find having a uniform is a wonderful way to build a sense of unity, remove social pressure, and eliminate competition or a focus on appearance. It also proves practical when doing our wide variety of activities. Campers wear combinations of solid royal blue and white; staff wear navy blue and white.

After being able to experience both the camper perspective and the counselor perspective, I can confidently say that Kohut has changed me. As a camper, you are able to step out of your comfort zone and try new activities that you never thought you would be able to try. Activities like water skiing, or catching the trapeze in the adventure course were always some highlights of the summer. Along with the activities, the people at this Kamp are amazing. While being a counselor is not easy, I now look back at it as one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Both as a camper and a counselor I

As a person of color that joined Kamp Kohut over the summer for the first time - this is not an inclusive environment. Don’t get fooled by the facade. The staff experience is in stark contrast to how campers experience camp. Favoritism plays a huge part here - if you’ve been here for awhile, you will presumably have a better experience than I did.… You will be underpaid, overworked and under appreciated. You will be expected to do many things outside of your job description. Leadership is unorganized and constantly talks behind people’s backs without direct communication

Kamp Kohut is a special place that offers a uniquely individualized summer camping experience. The most outstanding feature of this camp is the activity optionality they offer. Each week, campers sign-up for different types of outdoor, aquatic and creative artistry activities so that productively engaged and playfully joyful niches of interests and ambitions can mix, match and mingle within a community of close (but not too close, 6-inches to be exact) campers. With the right balance between comfort and challenge, within the beautiful natural landscapes of Maine, Kamp Kohut is simply one of the

I have two children who both attended Kamp Kohut. They will both tell you that it was the best experience of their life. They have made lifelong friends who live all over the United States and a few foreign countries as well. Kamp Kohut was an opportunity for our Houston, Texas kids to escape the heat and be in a totally different environment from our local camps where they could have attended with school friends. They both blossomed at camp and I truly believe that this particular camp offers a very wholesome, down to earth, self confidence building experience. Any child would be very lucky to

Kamp Kohut has been a wonderful experience for my son and daughter. They both went every summer since they were 10.
The setting is beautiful, the counselor's are friendly and knowledgeable. The kids participated in many activities and loved every minute of it. We recommended the camp to a few families and their kids also loved it!

Well, there really is not enough space for me to detail all of the positive attributes of kamp kohut. First introduced to the camp via neighbors back in the late 90's I was always curious about this place that local Mainers excitedly went away to for a month. When we moved from Maine to New York we wanted our two youngest to have an opportunity to explore the out of doors that their older siblings had growing up in Maine. We enrolled them in kohut and for the following 8 years watched as each summer they grew, tried new things, unplugged and fell in love with their kohut family. There are

Our son attended Kamp Kohut for 8 straight years. Each summer offered new and exciting adventures. The facilities are nice, the location is outstanding and the staff was always top notch. Our son always talked about how awesome his counselors were. The programs offered gave him the diversity he needed to try new things. Having staff from around the world also allowed our son to learn about different cultures - I think that is very neat. After each summer, he would get home and couldn't wait for the next summer. He created friendships that are still going strong today. I believe Kamp Kohut offered

Our son had an incredible experience at Kohut. He went for six years and loved it all. From the time he got on that first bus -- nervous and anxious -- he was nurtured and loved by the marvelous Steve Green (who talked baseball with him -- and swam at his side to make sure he'd pass the swim test!!!) and such a wonderful, carefully chosen group of counselors and the Kamp owners. We were looking for a camp that was warm and embracing and filled with sports and activities. We found it in Kohut. After that first summer, our son couldn't wait to go back. Our son's happy memories of Kamp will stay with
