The Consumer Council System of Maine (CCSM) is an independent, public instrumentality established by Maine law (Title 34-B, §3611). The CCSM is responsible for providing an independent and effective consumer voice into mental health public policy, services, and funding decisions.
The CCSM consists entirely of past/present recipients of mental health services (consumer/peers), including all Statewide Consumer Council representatives and paid staff.We welcome and need the participation of all mental health consumers/peers from all over Maine. Can a local council help me with my case manager, psychiatrist, therapists, and transportation to appointments, or medication management?. Answer: No, the CCSM cannot help members with appointments, case managers, therapists, etc. The function of the CCSM is to have an independent voice in the development of public policy and funding decisions.
This local council is currently working to rebuild membership. All members are attending other local council meetings via Zoom. Until this group is re-established, you are encouraged to attend any of our other local council meetings. If you have an interest in attending the Augusta Local Council and/or would like to help increase this councils membership, please contact the CCSM Outreach Coordinator at 207-687-6035.
Each local council will be voting in a chairperson and secretary to serve a one year term. Some local councils may also choose to elect a co-chair. Please check with your local council for more information. You many nominate yourself by completing the CCSM Elected Representative Application. Anyone wishing to run for a position is required to read the Local Council Representative Job Description.
This committee is responsible for creating issue statements and will include: conducting any necessary research on any given issue, follow up on each issue statement and managing timelines for responses to each statement. This group also reviews and finalizes issue statements from local councils and presents them to the Statewide Consumer Council for approval.

The people there are doing some wonderful & important work as they advocate for consumers of mental health services. This is not something the people could know how to do on there own. It is empowering work done by past & present cosumers with guidance by staff on how to effect public policy at state level.
