Central Coating Company was founded in 1958 by John P. Nolan. While attending Iowa State University and the University of Iowa, John worked summers painting farm buildings and eventually grain elevators. John P. Nolan and Central Coating Company became know for its quality work and soon the company was sandblasting and painting large tank farms throughout the United States.
In 1967, Central Coating Company relocated to California and installed its first Sprayed Polyurethane Foam roof at Allied Chemical Company in Port Chicago, CA. In time, Central Coating began to specialize in insulating tanks and warehouses for the wine industry, working in the Napa, Sonoma and Central San Joaquin Valleys.

Spray polyurethane foam, commonly referred to as SPF and used in many San Jose commercial roofing projects, is a spray-applied insulating foam plastic. The two chemical components are combined as they pass through the spray gun and contact the substrate as a liquid.
As the two components chemically react they expand in volume by 20 times and form a strong, rigid material with a density of 2.5 to 3.0 pounds per cubic foot and a compressive strength of 40 to 50 pound per square inch.Specialized equipment is used to apply the SPF and proper technical training is essential to obtain the best results for any roof in Silicon Valley, San Jose, the East Bay and over the entire Central and Northern California area.

When LinkedIn purchased this existing concrete tilt-up commercial building in Sunnyvale they wanted to do something special with their renovation. California has a building code requirement coming in 2030 that all commercial buildings will have Zero Net Energy (ZNE) use. LinkedIn made the forward step to upgrade this building to ZNE well ahead of the upcoming California requirement.
