Ruth and Bernard Alter, with their three children moved to San Jose from Chicago in 1957. San Jose only had a population of around 50,000 and the Santa Clara County was still primarily orchards. The 1960's were a time of great growth and The Yardstick was started as a fabric store for all the home sewers.

Other reviews seemed positive, so I was glad to make an appointment with Jack to install Plantation Shutters throughout our home. We set an appointment for "between 1 and 2pm." I scrambled around on other errands to make sure I was back home by 1pm. Upon arriving home I found a missed phone call (from just 30 minutes prior, I was on another conference call) and a text message (I don't text while driving) saying he would arrive in 30-45 minutes. When I saw the text (maybe 20-30 min after it was sent, and still before 1PM), I responded that I was confirmed. He then responded that I was too late and

Jack Alter is hands down the best shades and window treatment guy out there. His business, The Yardstick knows their business inside and out. I was so impressed with their quick and efficient communication, turn around time, and follow through. My new shades look fantastic! I had previously tried to go through another company who tried to up-sell me on a product I didn't want or need and they kept me hanging for weeks. Jack is a true professional he has a great knowledge of the various products for a successful installation. Our project was a little different and required access to the manufactures that could provide a 22 ft. and 12 ft. electric exterior roller shade with wind and sun control. I was so impressed with his expertise I ordered additional interior shades for sliders and windows.

Hands down the best home service experience I've had. The prices were fair, the product high quality, and the service expectational. The sales consultation was handled by Andrew and the owner, Jack, came once the final contract was nailed down. They were respectful, detail oriented and knowledgeable.
We ended up going with Hunter Douglas shades and the product was delivered within a couple weeks of order. Andrew himself came and did the install within a couple hours. The company delivered on time, and the results are aesthetically pleasing.
I would recommend Yardstick to anyone who wants to upgrade

Last year we went looking for finishing ideas for our home remodel. We stopped at another house that our contractor was finishing up and met Jack from Yardstick who was installing new blinds in the house. His work looked really good and he was a super nice guy, so when we neared the end of our project, we asked him to come over and see what he could do for us. He brought several ideas and examples with him and helped us finalize our blinds plan. He took measurements and a few weeks later they came out and installed the blinds throughout our house and we were very pleased.

Yep - 5 stars for The Yardstick and Jack! No pressure sales (you only called him because you want shades or blinds). He brought a lot of choices to the home to review which you could easily place against the wall to see if the colors / contrast were what one wants.
Saturday appointment was very convenient for me and the meeting certainly was not rushed as Jack answered a plethora of questions to help narrow down my choices and make a selection I have been delighted with ever since they shades have been installed.
