In the fall of 2018, the Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center was relocated to a 1,500 farm that was donated by Millard and JJ Oakley to the Tennessee Tech University Foundation near Cookeville, TN. The Center now uses the greenhouses and adjacent land to teach Tennessee Tech students how to grow and market produce and seeds.

This past summer we had eight students working as interns and had an excellent year for both the greenhouse tomatoes and beans. We currently have 165 bean varieties in stock for sale to the public. We look forward to the upcoming season and feel as though we are prepared, as we couldn't keep up with demand for the tomatoes and bean seeds.

Editor's Note: The Hill Family Bean, with its multi-colors, is a favorite of many and has been around for well over 100 years, providing both food and creative play during that time. Cecile Hill, grower and keeper of the seed, grew up in Haywood County, North Carolina and was one of 12 children - 8 girls came first, then 4 boys.
Around the middle of September this year, I went to North Carolina to visit with a first cousin I hadn't seen in forty-four years who was coming in from Idaho where he has lived since his retirement from the Air Force. We met at a convenient place for both of us--the farmers' market in Asheville.

Despite our long time apart, we instantly recognized each other and set about reliving times past on the Liner Creek part of the UpperCrabtree community in Haywood County, North Carolina, in the forties and fifties.First we discussed our Grandmother Sanford, who, we agreed, was a cook and gardener beyond compare.
One of the biggest problems for new gardeners and experienced ones alike concerns planting seeds. For many years gardening publications have instructed people to "sow" bean seeds. And mechanical planters have been designed to plant bean seeds much closer than corn seeds, for example. Seed catalogs often tell of how many pounds of bean seeds it will take to plant a given distance of row.
The history of agriculture is one of decreasing diversity and increasing specialization. Prior to its beginning some 10,000 years ago, man obtained food products from numerous wild plants. In the early stages of agricultural development, more than 3000 species of plants were domesticated for food production, but during the ensuing centuries, especially the present one, diversity diminished and specialization increased.
