Services
I've been a part of Matrix Theatre for five years and they have been the best years of my LIFE. To build community, improve lives, and foster social justice, Matrix Theatre Company teaches, creates, and shares theatre as an instrument of transformation. We create outstanding, affordable, and inclusive professional and educational theatre that addresses issues of community concern.
At Matrix, we have an ambitious mission: to improve lives, build communities, and foster social justice through teaching, creating, and sharing transformative theatre. For 26 years, we've created positive social change through art, but we can't continue our good work without your support. Find out how you can become a part of the Matrix Team by downloading the Producer Packet and looking over our materials.
It was a memorable night full of love and support for Matrix and our Founder, Dr. Shaun S. Nethercott. Matrix Theatre Company was founded in 1991 by Shaun and Wes Nethercott. The commitment to mission has resulted in activities in two primary areas: the creation and production of original plays and the experiential education in play writing, performance, and puppetry for people of all ages.
The professional Matrix Theatre seeks to create socially-conscious theatre that engages its audiences through the introduction of new thoughts, ideas, and dialogues. It is our objective to produce high-quality, professional theatre that aims to begin and/or further issue-based conversations and build upon the sense of community that will strengthen society's resolve toward social justice.
Each Matrix Minutes sound clip features an interview with a director, designer, staff member, or teaching artist to give audiences a bit of insight into the artistic processes involved with creating a Mainstage production or School of Theatre event. We would love it if you would give them a listen and share your favorite clips to help us get the word out.

Excellent local theatre. A small, intimate space means they have to be on their game. Always topical and socially conscious.

Attended a play here on Saturday 02.23.19.

It was easy to buy a ticket online and print it out at home, which I prefer. Good thing as it appeared to me that the play had sold out.

I did call the box office during the stated hours to get running time information and someone actually answered the phone. And knew the answer to my question.

When I arrived a half an hour before the play was to start (at 8:00), there was still parking in the attached and monitored lot. Glad I got there when I did as the ticket and website said no late seating and they hold to that. The play started promptly

Spent some of my teen years here. Very valuable life lessons learned here. Get hands on experience in the theatre. Or come by and watch a play. Open your mind and broaden your horizons.

My husband and I, along with some friends, went to see "Dream Deferred: Detroit, 1967," yesterday. It is a wonderful play with wonderful acting. We are not originally from Michigan and did not live in the area in 1967. We learned some things we did not know. The play coupled with the exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum are great educational experiences. This was my second time seeing a play at the Matrix (my husband's first). It is a small, intimate theater. Because it is small, there are no "bad" seats. We will be sure to go back.

This little theater near the ambassador bridge is a true discovery. We saw the Dream 67 riot oral histories. Fabulous acting, friendly work staff, very reasonably priced tickets, and an intimate space. If you get a chance come here. You will not be disappointed.

Visited for the first time to see Motherhood Out Loud on Mother's Day Eve with my mom, mother in-law, sister, and sister in-law. The acting was phenomenal and everyone left laughing. I will definitely be returning in the future.

This is a neat little venue. I came here for a play. The only thing that was annoying was that the woman selling me the ticket told me that she needed my address in order to swipe a debit card. I looked at her incredulously, and very slowly told her that this probably wasn't the case. She looked askance at me, and proceeded to do so. Lo and behold, you don't actually need to enter your address to swipe a debit card! Who knew? Everyone knew, except for the lady manning the box office at the Matrix theater. Annoying at the time, but amusing now.

What a little treasure of a theater. Seats about 40-50 people so the intimacy with the audience is great. We saw a Sunday night reading of the "Fabulous Ruins of Detroit" by Lee Jenkins, San Francisco State theater professor who lived in Detroit in the '60s,the time of the play.
It was such fun to see talented young actors put on something truly creative which these small venues really allow for. It's located near the new Welcome Center, near corktown, and really should be more widely advertised as it's truly a gem. $5 at the door as well! What a fun experience.
