In 1994, Mountain Stream Meditation became a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization. Our purpose is be a resource and a support for Insight Meditation (Vipassana) practice. Through this endeavor we learn from and respond to one of the Buddha's core teachings, The Three Jewels or The Three Refuges: Buddha (awakening), Dharma (truth), and Sangha (spiritual community).
In 2010 Mountain Stream purchased a unique property and remodeled the building into a beautiful meditation center we named the Nevada City Insight Center. For more details about the programs we offer, check our website listings. Mountain Stream Meditation has supported Buddhist meditation in the Sierra Nevada for twenty-seven years.
We are excited to announce our new three-year strategic plan. Last fall, we held a number of open forums where the Mountain Stream community was invited to express their vision for our future. These forums were very well attended, and many wonderful ideas about what would be best for our future were offered.
The Mountain Stream Board of Directors, in collaboration with the Teachers and Administrative team, undertakes the role of providing leadership that reflects the mission, vision and values of this organization. The Board commits to a shared responsibility to serve the needs of the Sangha (spiritual community), and all beings, now and for future generations.
Insight or Vipassana meditation is a simple form of Buddhist practice that helps to calm, collect and concentrate the mind. This practice originated with the Buddha over 2,550 years ago, and begins with focusing the attention on the breath. Meditation allows us to see into our conditioning, and to become more present in the any given moment.
