Dr. Douglas Lowy and Dr. Reid Nelson provide cutting edge periodontal services, specializing in laser treatment, minimally invasive techniques, and compassionate patient care. The Pinhole Surgical Technique PST was invented and patented by John Chao, D.D.S. and has been deemed a breakthrough technique for gum recession and treatment options for receding gums.
Gum recession is one of the signs of gum disease, but can also be caused by using incorrect brushing techniques, traditional gum surgery, orthodontic treatment, or be a side effect of certain medications. The earliest stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. Gingivitis occurs when plaque builds up around the gums and traps bacteria at your gum line, causing inflammation.
Raised in New York, Dr. Nelson came to Kentucky in 1975 to study Microbiology at the University of Kentucky, in Lexington, where he met his wife Donna. They now have two children and two grandchildren. When he can, he enjoys scuba diving. While he considers himself a clinician, he has lectured at the DMD, graduate and postgraduate levels and performed some unpublished research in the areas of prostaglandins and laser tissue welding.

Rest assured, we will work with insurance companies and handle all paperwork on your behalf. Ellyse has been with Drs. Nelson and Lowy since 2012. She graduated from the University of Louisville (Go Cards!) Dental Hygiene program in 2011 and has been an asset to our office since her very first day.
During the first appointment, the doctor will perform an exam, including probing and taking x-rays if needed. After the initial exam, the doctor will recommend a treatment plan, at which point our office staff will verify insurance benefits and schedule any necessary appointments.
