Put simply, letterpress printing is a form of relief printing, where the text or image is on a raised 'type-high' surface. Ink is applied to the raised surface and then paper is pressed directly against it to transfer the text/image. This type of printing uses spot color and one color at a time is printed.

Attended a Holiday Workshop today, WOW! Truly amazing and inspiring space. I had three hours to learn how to print and then spend time creating post cards and gift tags. Nancy was so helpful and clearly is very knowledgeable in letter press. I can't wait to come back for open hours! Highly recommend taking a class here!

H & V is a magical space filled with old-fashioned mechanical presses, well-organized metal and wood type, a slew of cans filled with printer's ink in a rainbow of colors, and all types of paper in many colors and sizes. You can "get inky" and learn to print your own cards, coasters or posters in one of the introductory workshops H & V offers, or browse through the assortment of cards, coasters and stationery printed by owner, Nancy Hill. Hazel & Violet is open most weekdays, as well as most Friday evenings. Drop in during First and Third Friday to feel the thrill of hand printing a free poster

I recently moved to Phoenix and was looking for a studio where I could rent time on a press in order to continue my letterpress hobby. Nancy was super accomodating and helpful and I'm grateful that she and her studio are here. Letterpress is a great way to nuture one's creative side - take a workshop - and then start exploring all of the cool things you can make!

Hazel and Violet is a smorgasbord of working vintage presses, the kind you've probably only seen in movies. Three dimensional metal letters of every style and kind, all backwards, arranged by hand, and inked up to crank out wedding invites, business cards, posters, coasters, greeting cards and stationery.
You can get your stuff made or make it yourself at a workshop. Great fun for creatives, designers, free speech advocates, stationery fiends, DIY-ers, nostalgists, the mechanically minded and ink-stained wretches.
Better yet, it's nestled in a colorful stretch of Historic Grand Ave., teeming

Swinging by Hazel & Violet for a First or Third Friday is fun, but the Workshops are really where it's at. I had a fantastic experience there recently working on a special creative project. It had been a long while since I've done letterpress, and Nancy was extremely helpful with all of the details - the project came out wonderfully! Highly recommended!!

As a teacher of creative writing and composition, I was particularly interested to take a letterpress workshop with Nancy, which was utterly fascinating. Nancy was extraordinarily patient with me as I made lots of mistakes and had tremendous fun. I was so determined to hand-set one of my poems that I ended up renting time at Hazel & Violet over many subsequent weeks to finish this project, and Nancy was extremely generous with her time and attention to this utter novice. I came away from this experience with greatly deepened awe and appreciation for the true craftspeople of printing--as they have

Hazel & Violet is one must-stop along Grand Avenue for a ton of reasons... Its day to day business (unique, high quality letterpress printing and workshops). Its contribution to the community via First and Third Friday events and arts programming. It's a cool space in a historic building. And the welcoming feeling you get upon entering, walking around, and visiting.

I love watching the vintage printing presses doing their job...old machinery at work can be fascinating. Many pre -printed cards, etc., available for purchase....but wedding invitations, business cards, announcements, etc., can be custom ordered ... For real fun, gather a few friends and take a workshop to learn about Letterpress printing and do some yourself!

I have not yet had a chance to attend one of Hazel & Violet's Letterpress workshop, but I would like to give one of the owners, Nancy, a shoutout. I was signed up for a 4 hour workshop this past weekend, but had to cancel a day before because I wasn't able to find childcare for my two kids. Nancy promptly responded and refunded my money. I was incredibly impressed with her customer service and look forward to attending a workshop in the future.
